ARTS, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND CRAFTS

The main objective of the Arts, Crafts, and Photography is to encourage members to foster and support arts activities in all communities. Chairman and presidents --encourage your clubs to try one project or something different this year to enhance the arts in your community. Consider the following:

Promoting national and state VSA (Very Special Arts) programs. VSA is an international organization dedicated to providing quality art programs for children and adults with disabilities.

Participate/support YAM -Youth Art Month. (See GFWC club manual for suggestions.)

Foster community art -(Again the GFWC club manual has some excellent suggestions.)

Try photography--there are three contests you can enter --“The World in Pictures”, “GFWC Volunteers in Action”, and “A Year in Pictures’.

GFWC bestows honors/awards for work by clubs in these areas. Consult the GFWC club manual for details and deadlines.

NFWC PAINTING CONTEST:
Promotion of painting as an artistic expression and recognition of the achievements of GFWC members in painting.

Categories:
• Portraits
• Pottery
• Landscape/Seascape
• Abstract
• Sculpture
• Miscellaneous
• Still Life
• Floral

Rules:
• Entry must be no smaller than 12” x 12” and no larger than 13” x 18” including matting.
• Entries on materials other than canvas must be matted. No frames or glass. Pastels should be sprayed with a fixative.
• All paintings must be original. Subject matter is the choice of the artist.
• The following information must be attached to the back: artist’s name, address, phone number, medium, and name of sponsoring club.

Awards:
• First place winners in each category will receive ribbons at the District level.
• First Place winners will be eligible for State completion.
• Districts must send name of entries to NFWC Chairman before April 1st of each year.
• East District may bring on entry per category to the State Convention each year.

ADULT ART CONTEST:

Rules:
• Only GFWC clubwomen may enter.
• No copies.
• Work done within last year.
• Work ready for display.
• Label -back upper right corner - name, address, phone number, category, and sponsoring club.
• Entries must be sent to the state chairman by April 1, 2007 and April 1, 2008.

Categories:
• Watercolor
• Oil/Acrylic
• Drawings (pen/ink or pencil)
• Pottery/Sculpture

Subject matter is choice of the artist --Some possible suggestions are animals, wildlife, composition with figures, flowers, scenic, portrait, still life, other.

NEW CATEGORY: ILLUSTRATION
Illustration Original Poem:

Rules:
• Poem and illustration to be displayed on front of entry together.
• Poem on left side and illustration on the right side.
• The overall maximum size after mounting on poster board should not exceed 18x24 inches.

Illustration Copy work Poem:

Rules:
• Entrant illustrates favorite poet’s poem.
• Same rules as illustration original poem.

Awards: First place winners in each category will receive ribbons at the district level. First place winners will be eligible for the state competition.

STUDENT ART CONTEST:
Local art shows are held with winners advancing to the district level to be judged. The District 1st place winners in each grade K-9, the District lst place winners in each category (10-12 -high school), and the “Best of Show” high school district winners will be shown and judged at the state convention. Each club is responsible for entering and picking up their art at the state convention. Please send the winners names to me by April 1, 2007, and April 1, 2008.

Rules:
• Original work only.
• Maximun size 24 inches x 36 inches.
• Work ready to display - matted -no glass.
• Label -(back) upper right corner - district, club, student’s name, school, and grade.
• Note category for high school entries.

JUDGE EACH GRADE SEPARATELY:
• Kindergarten and First Grade: Possible categories: (crayon drawing, pencil drawing (black or colored), tempera/acrylic, watercolor, magic marker, chalk drawing, finger painting, computer generated art, other.
• Second Grade-Sixth Grade: Possible categories: (crayon drawing, pencil drawing (black or colored), watercolor painting, computer generated art, pastel drawing, chalk drawing, oil/acrylic painting, magic marker drawing, sculpture (wire or metal), other. Illustration original poem and illustration copy work poem.) Same rules as in adult art.
• Seventh, Eighth, Ninth - JUDGE EACH GRADE SEPARATELY.
• Tenth, Eleventh, Twelfth - JUDGE CATEGORY.

Awards:
• A first place blue ribbon is awarded in each category for grades 10-12.
• Select one Best of Show from all the categories.
• Encourage high school students to submit art from more than one category.
