Citizenship Program

Veterans Affairs:
• Women in Military Service for America (WIMSA) Encourage the Mayor/City Council or proclaim the week preceding Veterans Day as “Women Veterans Recognition Week.”
• Department of Veterans’ Affairs Educate children though school awareness programs like “What Is a Veteran?” (Check Resources/VAVS)
• Soldiers and Their Families Collect and send coupons to families overseas. When received, volunteers sort and distribute. Visit the web site for further information. Not those military commissaries will redeem coupons up to six months after they have expired.

Citizenship Participation
• Celebrate the National Anthem Project, the campaign to get America singing “The Star Spangled Banner” while spotlighting the important role music education plays.
• Help someone study for the U.S. Citizenship test.

Historic Preservation
• Work to preserve historic sites and artifacts.

Safety Program
• Community Safety
  Order the GFWC Community Safety for Women facts sheets. (Check the Resources/GFWC) Remind members of local hazardous product collection sites and collection dates so they can remove these products safely from their homes.
• Home Safety
  Obtain fact sheets from the United States Fire Administration on a variety of titles, such as “Fire Safety During and After a Natural Disaster,” “Rural Fire Prevention,” “Holiday Fire Prevention,” etc.
• Vehicle Safety
  Promote the use of booster seats for children between 40 and 80 pounds and less than 4’9” tall. These are usually children ages 4-9. Provide information to low-income parents who can apply to the United Way for free seats donated by Ford Motor Company. Invite a speaker from AARP to educate members and/or their elders about the 55/ALIVE/Mature Driving Programs.

The above are just a few examples for programs and projects in the Public Affairs Department. Please refer to the gray program booklets in your GFWC Manual for complete listing of programs, etc. Check the Resources sections for program aids, booklets, etc.

SOPHOMORE PILGRIMAGE
The Sophomore Pilgrimage will be held in April 2007 and 2008. Club Presidents will receive information, date and registration form in January each year.

LEGISLATIVE DAY
This day is in the spring of 2007, at the State of Nebraska Legislature for club members. There will not be a Legislative Day in 2008 because of the short session. Club Presidents will receive dates, information, etc.
