What is an Appraisal?
A professional appraisal provides the protection that you need by
applying uniform, objective, and fair methods of establishing the
value of your possessions. Through a licensed appraiser, the current
valuation of your personal property becomes part of your legal
records. In addition, it is through an appraisal that the dollar
value of your property is established for estate tax, equitable
distribution or donation.
Most Common Reasons You Might Need An
Appraisal:
- Estate Taxation, Distribution and Probate
-
Insurance Coverage, Damage and Claims - Estate and Trust
Planning
-
Charitable Donation - Divorce - Bankruptcy
- Sale of Assets

An appraisal is an unbiased, reasoned opinion of value based upon an
identification of the object and analysis of the marketplace, which
is substantiated by actual market examples. This is a signed
document which is suitable for submission to insurance companies, the
courts and the Internal Revenue Service. As required by the Code of Ethics of the American
Society of Appraisers and the Uniform Standards of Professional
Appraisal Practice (USPAP), the appraiser must report the facts
acting as a disinterested third party, rather than as an advocate.
The American Society of Appraisers requires recertification and
successful completion of the USPAP course every five years.
Appraisal procedures, research methodology, market selection and
the resulting value conclusions can differ with various purposes
and functions of appraisal assignments. A report prepared for one
purpose very likely would be inappropriate for another; for
instance, an insurance appraisal would not be acceptable for
estate tax or charitable contribution.
The Uniform Standards of Appraisal Practice
For information about the federal minimum standards for appraisers
(USPAP) you may contact The Appraisal Foundation, which has been
authorized by Congress as the source of appraisal standards and
appraiser qualifications. These standards were developed and
copyrighted in 1987, have been adopted by the major appraisal
organizations in North America, and are the generally accepted
standards of appraisal practice. The Foundation may be reached at:
