Basil was born on 22 September 1883, the son of George Bannatyne Wymer and Florence Marion Bright Smith, at Claines, Worcestershire.
He became a naval cadet (known throughout his career as B.L. Wymer). As a cadet he was ordered to the "Hannibal" on Jan. 13, 1899, and on Nov. 6, 1899 to the "Revenge", as a midshipman, and then the "Victorious". By December 1903 he was sub-lieutenant, and as such was ordered to the "Grafton". By January 1905 he was a temporary lieutenant, still with the "Grafton". By Febuary 1906 he was a lieutenant, and as such was ordered to the "Thistle". On 18 June 1908 he was ordered to the "Vivid" as an additional officer, and to the "Mars" on re-commissioning On 25 July 1908 he was re- |
commissioned as a lieutenant, and was ordered to the "Crescent" as an additional officer, and to the sloop "Cadmus"
In 1910 he was skipper of the sloop Cadmus, which left Hong Kong on 15 October for Swantow.
On 28 January 1911 he was ordered to the "Terpsichore".
In December 1911 he was ordered to the "Vivid".
He married Marianne Margaret Wybrants. She died an early death in 1920. He finally became a commander, R.N., and retired to become an avid golfer with the Guildford Golf Club. He won their Monthly Spoon for November 1923. He moved to Durban, South Africa, and married a girl named Dinah Victoria (last name probably Neilson), and they seem to have had a daughter, Maude Neilson Wymer. |
