John Laing                                           1755-
John was born on 16 May 1755, the son of James Laing and Sophia Lundy, at Pittenweem, Fife, Scotland. He migrated to Sunderland from the Fifeshire village of Pittenweem, and commenced business with his son David on the north-west corner of the North Sands. His younger brother Philip arrived in 1792, and joined the business in 1793. David died in 1796. John and Philip remained in business together until 1818, the year of the move to the Deptford yard
