Thomas MacLeod                                   1881-1963

  Thomas was born on 5 June 1881, the son of Thomas MacLeod and Blane "Jeannie" Robertson, at Brisbane, Australia.   He attended Leichhardt State School and Brisbane Grammar School.   He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1902, and became a practising solicitor at Brisbane.   He was a flying enthusiast, and in 1910 helped to found the first Queensland Aero Club and a State branch of the Aerial League of Australia, and they proceeded to build an engineless aeroplane (glider).   On 11 October 1910 Thomas made a bat's-wing monoplane glider flight at Herston Heights.   On 22 December 1910, he made bi-plane glider flights at 17 Mile Rocks, Oxley.   In November 1914 Macleod formed the Queensland Volunteer Flying Civilians, and later sailed to England and joined the Royal Flying Corps.   He was invested as an Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.).   He gained the rank of Major in the service of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force.   He was also decorated with the Croix de Guerre.

Ruby Margaret Shannon                       1883-1923
  Ruby was born on 11 March 1883, youngest of the four girls among the 11 children of John Shannon and Margaret Young, in East Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.   Ruby was educated at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School in the early 1920s.   She was a woodcarver and composer.   She composed watzes, eg The Normanby Waltz written for the Normanby Picnic Races at Saltbush, and The Midnight Waltz.   She was also interested in woodcarving.   For instance, she carved the pulpit in St Luke's Church of England, Toowoomba, given by the family in memory of their mother who died in 1916.

Aurea was born on 4 Oct 1884, the daughter of George James Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle and Lady Rosalind Frances Stanley.
She was first married to Denyss Chamberlaine Wace, but that marriage ended in a divorce.

Lady Aurea MacLeod, of Par, widow of Major Thomas MacLeod and youngest daughter of the ninth Earl of Carlisle, left £57,533 net (duty paid, £22,368). After personal bequests she left the residue equally between Oxfam, the United Kingdom Alliance, and the National British Woman's Total Abstinence Union.
