Charles "David" Doxford 1856-1935 David was born on 13 July 1856, the son of William Doxford and Hannah Pile, at Sunderland. He preceeded direct from school to the family shipyard, where he started in the drawing office in 1873. Five years later he became outside works manager. He became a partner in 1980. He later became a Justice of The Peace for Sunderland. He married Laura Barber in 1883. In 1902, David took out a 99 year lease on the 24 acre Silksworth House Estate. The manor house was built in 1780. His daughter Aline, later bought out the lease, and on her death in 1968, bequeathed the house and estate to Sunderland Corporation. The house was renamed Doxford House, and the grounds became Doxford Park. Laura Barber 1858-1903 Laura was born on 13 April 1858, the daughter of William Barber and Elizabeth Beswick, at Sunderland.
