The last contract of Robert Thompson & Sons They built two large motor trawlers, the Descobridor and the Corte Real, for a Portuguese firm. They were launched in April and May 1931, and were the largest motor trawlers in the world, each of 1,550 tons deadweight. The crews were actually signed on when the Portuguese firm defaulted. The vessels had cost £100,000 to build, and Thompsons were faced with a heavy loss. The trawlers lay idle in the river for many months, and eventually were taken over by a syndicate and afterwards sold to a French firm. After the death of Errol Hay Thompson in 1932, and the closing of the Robert Thompson & Sons Southwick yard, the Bridge Dockyard was closed and dismantled in 1933. |
