John Adamson               1852-1933
John was born on 26 April 1852, the son of William Adamson and Mary Ann Robinson, Roecliff House, Whitburn, County Durham. Adamson was a 19th Century name which was famous not only in shipbuilding, but shipowning too, and the family association with ships continued through the generations and ended only when the last Westoll steamers were sold.
At one time the names of the Adamson Barques and Brigs were well known on Wearside and Sunderland seafarers were proud to sail under the command of such mariners as Captains J. Scarlet, H. Blanch, J. Woodruff, H. W. Chappel, Magnus White, and Matthew Southern. Magnus White was a Shetlander who settled in Sunderland as a young man. One of his school pals who also came to Sunderland was Magnus Mail, after whom one of the Westoll Steamers was named.
