John Young Short 1844-1900 John was born on 8 January 1844, the son of George Short and Martha Young, in Sunderland. He married Mary Ada Smart in 1873. He was the owner of Shorts' Shipbuilders. He took control at age 41, in 1885, on the death of his father, George Short who founded the firm in 1850. John died on 24 January 1900, and his three sons, Thomas, George, and Harry took over, changing the name to Short Brothers Ltd.. Mary Ada Smart 1853-1932 Mary was born about 1853, in Sunderland.
