I previously owned a 1969 BMW 1600 (same body style) and a near new 1976 BMW 2002. However, none was a tii model, which is the high performance version of the car. I bought this car in 1997 from a mechanic who worked at La Jolla Independent BMW, which is owned by Carl Nelson, a west coast 2002 guru. The tii model was made for only 3 years; 1972 and 1973 with the round lights and 1974 with the square lights. A debate rages between fans of the round tails lights versus the square tail lights. I like the square ones. Even though this tii was a 1972 and had round lights, there were numerous features of the car that were hard to pass up, so I purchased it. My thinking was I could change the tail lights down the road. And that I did. While in the body shop replacing the taillights, I had the popup aftermarket moonroof replaced with an electric sunroof from a 318i. The car was not close to stock when I got it so I was free to implement my changes without being labeled the one who first molested the car.
