Evaluation

(When possible be specific and give examples)

Setup & maintenance of computers, network and hardware

Our Regional Technology Director (RTD) summed up this extremely well in our site technology evaluation: USTs are maintaining the infrastructure at Feaster and have creatively found ways to keep the aging hardware functional.

Working together, Mr. Krause and Mr. Bennett have performed most of the repairs needed themselves, saving us huge portions of money. Mr. Krause has also established good relationships with vendors, finding us amazing deals on equipment!! An example of this would be the excellent deals we obtained this year on networked laser printers for each house, totally Mr. Krause's idea!

We received a "proficient" marking on our Local Area Network (LAN) on our site technology evaluation performed by our RTD, as all necessary workstations and locations are connected to the network.

Maintenance of phone system

Maintenance of video system

N/A -- LMS maintains video system

Support technology initiatives as needed (e.g. benchmarks, HRO, QLCs, SIS )

Feaster-Edison has consistently tested new technology initiatives for Edison Schools. This year alone, we tested updates to Vantage Benchmarks, Starship Schools Benchmarks, and internet-based email. In the past, we have piloted QLC 4.0, SASI, and benchmarks. There is no way we would have been able to do this without the technical expertise of Mr. Krause. His enthusiasm for Edison's initiatives is tremendous, and his commitment to their success is commendable!

Management of user accounts

Mr. Krause shares the management of user accounts with our MTC, who is responsible for ordering them and maintaining them in our database. Once they are received, Mr. Krause puts them in their proper groups within AtEase. He assists the MTC in cleaning out the database at year's end. We received an "exemplary" marking in this category on our site technology evaluation performed by our RTD.

Mr. Krause is very aware of the responsibility that comes with having access to all accounts and their passwords, and never compromises his users. Once this year, access was needed to a document in the STM's email inbox. An administrator suggested getting the document without permission from the STM, but Mr. Krause refused to do so without first discussing the situation with the STM.

Backup and restoration

Backing up our systems is a high priority with Mr. Krause. He has consistently done so over his five years here at Feaster, creating both daily and weekly backups, stored in multiple places (even off-campus). When restoration is needed, Mr. Krause has never failed us. In fact, we received an "exemplary" marking in the category of both server and workstation backups on our site technology evaluation performed by our RTD.

Technology Support and Help Desk

There are four key elements to a successful help desk, according to Edison Schools. They are professional attitude, management of user's expectations, timely response to user's requests, and finding solutions. Mr. Krause has consistently displayed a professional attitude this year, providing courteous support while gently reminding users of procedures to follow for healthy computers, regular backups, and properly logging issues in the Tech Repair Request database. All requests for help are completed in a timely manner, with priority given to teacher laptops and administrator/office issues. As far as finding solutions, Mr. Krause and Mr. Bennett work off each other very well -- where one is weak, the other is strong. Together, they are probably one of the strongest UST teams in Edison, and consistently provide support to other USTs through our Tech Talk newsgroup. Mr. Krause is so capable that he applied for the Regional User Support Technician Mentor position, and was one of the strongest candidates to apply for it.

Reviewer Comments - (Results achieved, significant changes since last review, strengths/development needs, etc.)

Although the technology in an Edison School is a small portion of the overall picture, it is critical that every part of it functions properly. By ensuring that the technology Edison places in a school works correctly, we give every student the opportunity to enhance his or her education that much more. Mr. Krause firmly believes in the mission of Edison Schools, and it is because of this commitment to providing a world-class education to every child that our technology team is one of the best in Edison. Every item that Mr. Krause is responsible for on our site technology evaluation received a "proficient" or "exemplary" rating.

This year, Mr. Krause was able to save enough of his repair maintenance budget by performing repairs himself, that he was able to purchase a networked laser printer for each house. This was his own idea, and one that impressed our RTD. We also created an Online Resources Server this year. Mr. Krause collaborated with our Academy Director to create an online calendar, facilitating planning and communication among our staff. At the STM's request, he also created a way to maintain an online photo album of school events, and regularly works with our newspaper staff photographers to keep it updated. He also collaborated with Mr. Bennett to create a way to make website templates and clipart available to the staff at the STM's request. Mr. Bennett and Mr. Krause also worked together to move our staff newsgroup from an Edison-based server (which frequently went down) to a local server. Our staff newsgroup is available 24/7 now, even when email or other Edison newsgroups are down. We received a "proficient" marking on our site's use of Staff News on our site technology evaluation by our RTD -- which was made easier to achieve with our onsite group.

Currently, Mr. Krause is working on an initiative for Edison HQ with Mr. Bennett. He proposed to Don Sunderland (Edison's CIO of Technology) the use of a license-free platform for our schools, using Linux. This could potentially save Edison Schools millions of dollars, and Mr. Sunderland has given our USTs his full support and any resources needed. They'll be testing this throughout the next several months. If this project alone does not show Mr. Krause's initiative and commitment to the success of Edison Schools, I don't know what does!!

Being a tech, relationships with members of the staff are not always easy to maintain. When technology is working well, the Tech Team members never hear from the staff. However, when things are wrong, we definitely hear about it. As per his goals for this year, Mr. Krause has made great efforts to improve his relationship with staff members, and it has shown. :o) He has also worked very closely with the STM to ensure that our technology refresh runs as smoothly as possible, and has better maintained the inventory database.

We commend Mr. Krause proactive use of available technologies through implementation of the administrator’s palm pilot set-up. He purchased several handheld instruments and successfully integrated these devices to a central location (Marta’desk). His efforts created enhanced communication and support.

This has been a stellar year for Mr. Krause. His leadership skills and teamwork have grown by leaps and bounds. He has taken on an unofficial mentoring role with our other UST and MTC, guiding them through their weaker areas. He stepped in and helped smooth communication between CVESD and our site to facilitate the SASI-Pentamation uploads. Mr. Krause has learned to communicate his opinion in a manner that contributes in a positive way. He has been a valuable, contributing member to Feaster's Technology Team, and TSL
( Technology as a Second Language )
works at Feaster because of his contributions!
