BASIC QUILTMAKING COURSE OUTLINE

A. Preliminaries
    1. Beginning survey - to determine student's background, interest and abilities.
    2. Statement of teacher's philosophy, goals and course objectives.
    3. Outline of the course.

B. Background
    1. History of quilt making.
    2. Vocabulary.
    3. Discussion of quilt making equipment and supplies, tools, textiles, etc.
    4. Discussion of resources: books, magazines, etc.

C. Basics
    1. Quilt planning, yardage, designs, functions, etc.
    2. Understanding a pattern.
    3. Rotary cutting.

D. Techniques
    1. Piecing
    2. Marking/cutting fabrics
    3. Grain lines
    4. Sewing
    5. Block assembly order
    6. Straight seams
    7. Hand/Machine techniques
    8. Stitches
    9. Pressing

E. Assembly and Quilting
    1. Assembling and securing the textile sandwich.
    2. Quilting in the ditch or tying.
    3. Signing and dating.

F. Post view
    1. Use and care of completed project.
    2. Review.
    3. Wide range of show and tell items and teaching aids.
    4. Final survey/critique – to determine teaching effectiveness, course content and desire for further study.
