In
his prime, he was at the top of his game, but decades of pressure
and heavy drinking have taken their toll. He can now be spotted on
various coastal new england courses: a lanky silhouette staggering
across the misty landscape, playing for free because its the off-season,
with a couple of old dogs and a bottle. Late last february, a couple
of kids out on the cape claimed to have seen him lying face-down on
the fifth green, still clutching a thermos lid half-full of vodka...the
faint barking of his dogs heard somewhere off in the distant woods.
