KVRO FM was on the Oklahoma State University campus and shared studios and facilities with KOSU FM--OSU's official radio station. KOSU's listenership was mainly the OSU faculty with a block program format offering many different kinds of music, radio plays, news, sports and information. KVRO, on the other hand, went on the air in the early sixties as a "wired-wireless" AM Top 40 station broadcasting rock 'n roll music, news, and OSU sports at 660 on the AM band targeting the OSU students. In the mid sixties, KVRO, Inc. was created by a group of OSU Radio, Television and Film (RTF) alums and acquired a commercial FM license from the FCC to broadcast on 105.5 FM. Where KOSU was a noncommercial entity, KVRO was a commercial nonprofit venture that donated its proceeds to the operation of both KVRO and KOSU. The two stations gave students enrolled in broadcasting through OSU's College of Arts and Science's School of Communications Radio, TV, and Film (RTF) department a hands-on live broadcasting experience. KVRO was the brainchild of Dr. Robert (Doc) P. Lacy, PhD, who was in charge of the RTF department at OSU. |
