This
egret in the sunset is one of my favorites. Look closely and you'll see
that he has a fish in his mouth. My son and I were walking along the lake
at LSU trying out some new equipment. I had just bought an old Vivitar
300mm lens for my Konica T2. I had the 300mm plus a 2X teleconverter
mounted on my new Bogen tripod. I saw the egret standing patiently as the
sun was setting and set up the tripod. I had just told my son that we
should be going when the egret struck. I yelled in disappointment but
recovered in time to get this shot.
I
suppose that this photograph is my claim to fame. It was taken during a
Popular Photography workshop in Montana and selected for publication in the May,
2002 issue of the magazine. The bright sun and dark rocks was a
challenge in exposure. I metered for the sky and bracketed widely;
however, none of the slides came out as I'd hoped. Having read about a
technique for combining photos, I scanned one slide having the best sunrise and
another having the best rocks. I then combined the two in
Photoshop.
