From the Med I believe in 65, we were 1 day out of Norfolk AND Winston Churchill died! I was in CIC on watch when the message came up, had land on the air search radar and looking at all the undies we bought our wives and girlfriends in France, with all nite movies and everyone had Channel feaver, You Know. OUR Tac AN Radar was UP, Someone had to wake up the OLD Man, the Assist. CIC Officer was in CIC, the OD - NO Way Me as his driver in port was given the duty. The CO. was a light sleeper GUY Levitt was his name and me as an Unser he trusted me and we had good times together, well went down to his cabin knocked and went in, he read the message. The question was , Does this check out, as we had beach jumpers in the days well it was authicated and checked out as we had spoke with the USS Conyingham and USS King whom were in company and were going with us! 400 miles off the coast of Greenland " IN FEB." We meet an oiler , topped off, some brown baggers got highlined, had to call home by Ham operator to Pittsburg Pa. to try to get my parents and girlfriend whom were heading to Norfolk for our arrival the next day. Well my dad almost had a heart attack when a state cop pulled him over in Va. and told him your son will NOT be arriving today and for sometime. Johnson was the Pres. at that time , got sick and sent the Sec. of State and he took extra time in England, and we took a pounding in the North Atlantic, the chow line was very short, bean soup and fruit were always on the menue. I have many pictures or slides of this, we opened up the back of cic and the sea was over our heads, some great shots, all I have to do is FIND THEM!!!
