What
is Reiki?
The word "Reiki" ('Ray-key') is made up of two Japanese
words:
"Rei" - meaning "universal, spiritual or free flowing"
and
"Ki" - meaning "life force energy"
Reiki is therefore "universal life force energy".
This universal life force energy, by definition,
is found everywhere in the universe and is the same energy that modern
science in general, and quantum physics in particular, recognises as the
subatomic energy which underlies all matter.
It is also the same energy known to many ancient
civilisations, by many names, including Ch'i (Chinese), Prana (Asian Indian),
Barraka (Islamic countries), Ruach (Hebrews), Mana (Polynesians) and Orenda
(Iroquois Native Americans), to name but a few!
Although this energy is present everywhere,
imbalances can and do occur. When they occur in the human body the results
may include stress, inability to concentrate, depression and physical disease.
Reiki Therapy is a technique for stress reduction
and relaxation which involves the channelling of universal life force energy
through the Reiki Practitioner and into the Recipient, with the intention
of correcting any imbalance of energy. Because the Practitioner merely
acts as a channel for the energy, he or she also benefits from the Reiki
energy as it passes through them!
Reiki works on the physical, emotional, mental
and spiritual levels which means that, unlike orthodox medicine, it treats
the person as a whole, rather than just the symptoms of a condition. The
human body has a natural propensity to heal itself and Reiki simply accelerates
this process.
Who discovered Reiki?
Reiki has been known and used, under many names,
for thousands of years in the East but was kept as a closely guarded secret
and virtually lost until the beginning of the 20th century, when a Japanese
man called Mikao Usui re-discovered it.
There are many versions of the story of how
Reiki was re-discovered but they are not as important as the fact that
it was found again! Most of the accounts state that Usui was searching
for the healing methods used by great healers such as Jesus and Buddha.
He eventually found the secret in the ancient Mahayana Sutras, the doctrine
of life held sacred by Indian and Tibetan Buddhists.
Back in Japan, he began to tell everybody about
this healing energy, which he called Reiki. One day he met a retired naval
officer called Chujiro Hayashi. Hayashi received his Reiki Mastership from
Usui in 1925, becoming one of several Reiki Masters initiated by Usui before
he died, in 1926. Being from a military background, Hayashi sought to systematise
Usui's teachings and developed the sequence of hand positions in use today.
He also trained teams of Reiki Practitioners and opened the first Reiki
Clinic in Tokyo.
Reiki was brought to the West in 1937 by Hawayo
Takata, who was born in Hawaii to Japanese parents. After the premature
death of her husband due to a heart attack, Takata was diagnosed as having
a gall bladder condition. When her sister died, Takata went to visit her
parents who had returned to Japan. While she was there she became very
ill and was told that she needed surgery but, due to a severe respiratory
condition, the use of anaesthetics would be very risky. Her condition worsened
and she also developed appendicitis and a tumour. Surgery was now a necessity
to save her life. On the day of her operation she asked the surgeon if
there was any other way that she might be healed. The surgeon, whose sister
had been healed by Hayashi's healers, told her about the Reiki clinic.
Takata never had the operation and went instead to the Reiki clinic, where
she was completely healed in body, mind and spirit after four months. She
begged Hayashi to teach her Reiki but he refused because he thought of
her as a foreigner and he did not want Reiki to leave Japan at that time.
Eventually, he relented and Takata worked at the clinic as a Reiki healer
for over a year, before returning to Hawaii where she opened her own Reiki
clinic.
In 1938 Hayashi visited Takata in Hawaii, made
her a Reiki Master and named her as his successor. He realised there was
going to be a war and that Reiki could well become lost to the world again
if he perished, so he allowed Takata to create more Reiki Masters, on the
condition that she charged for the training so that people would appreciate
the value of what they were being taught. After the war she brought Reiki
to mainland United States, Canada and then to Europe. In the last ten years
of her life, Takata initiated 22 Reiki Masters and she died in December,
1980.
Since the 1970's Reiki has spread rapidly and it
is thought that there are now over one million Reiki Practitioners worldwide!

What happens during a
Reiki Session?
Reiki Therapy is given by placing hands on, or slightly
above parts of the body that correspond with the major energy centres (Crown,
Brow, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Navel and Root). The hands are left
in each position for 2 to 5 minutes. There is no massaging involved and
the Practitioner will respect personal privacy. Both the Recipient and
the Practitioner remain fully clothed, although the Recipient may be asked
to remove shoes or items of tight-fitting clothing such as a large belt.
The therapy may be given with the Recipient lying
down on a couch, the floor or seated on a straight-backed chair. A full
session can last for an hour or more but, if time is limited, a shorter
session can be arranged which lasts about 15 minutes. While the effects
of the shorter session may not be as long lasting as a full session, remarkable
results can be obtained even in this short time.
In the room where the Reiki is given there
may be relaxing music and/or aromatic fragrances to create a pleasant atmosphere.
However, these are not essential to the therapy and can be removed if the
Recipient wishes.
If you wish, you may bring a friend to sit
quietly and observe the session. Children under 16 years old must ALWAYS
bring a Parent or Guardian to the session.
What does Reiki feel
like?
The experience of receiving Reiki energy varies from
person to person, session to session and sometimes even during a session.
Some people feel nothing, apart from pleasant relaxation; others feel warmth,
a coolness, a tingling or a gentle flowing sensation. It is not unusual
for people to become so relaxed that they fall asleep. Occasionally people
may experience emotions, which may be happy or sad, and some particularly
sensitive people even see images while their eyes are closed. These things
are all part of the therapy and should not be fought against.
What happens after a
Reiki Session?
When the session is over you will be given time to
regain your thoughts, or gently woken up, if you have fallen asleep! You
will be offered a glass of water, as Recipients are often thirsty after
receiving Reiki.
Before leaving you may book another Reiki Session
- there are no rules about how frequent sessions should be, or how many
sessions a person needs - it is up to you! You cannot overdose on Reiki,
the only constraint is the time both you and the Practitioner have to spare!
How much will it cost?
30 Minute Session
..$25.00
1 Hour Full Session
...$45.00
Home visits by arrangement.
You can earn yourself a free 30 minute Reiki session
by arranging a Reiki Evening at your own home for up to 8 friends (15 minute
sessions).
Reiki Training is also available (Please ask for
details).
Mikao Usui, who re-discovered Reiki, taught that
whenever Reiki energy is given to someone, the Recipient should always
give something back in return. Nowadays this tends to be money because
this is what we value most in exchange for a service but originally, and
even sometimes today, the offer of a service in return or a small gift
was equally acceptable.
Reiki Training Reiki I, Reiki
II, Reiki III
Training classes are $50 each level,
or you may take Reiki I and II on the same day for $75.00.
You will receive a training
manual, as well as a frameable certificate after attunement. I
offer online classes and attunements, if you are not in the VA area. Free
