Philmont 2009 “I want to go baaaaaaaaack to Philmont!”
The information presented here is to be used as a guide to your Philmont adventure. It is the culmination of our first experience at Philmont in July 2008, as well as years of experience from other dedicated Scout Leaders.
What is Philmont?
Philmont is a national High Adventure base, owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America. Scouts from around the world come to Philmont to hike its’ beautiful and rugged mountains. Thirty-four staffed camps and fifty-five trail camps are operated by the ranch (four camps are in a national forest – not on Philmont proper). Philmont has high mountains which dominate rough terrain with an elevation ranging from 6,500 to 12,441 feet. Backpacking 5-14 miles per day, for 12 days with a 35 to 50 lb pack, requires great physical training and endurance. Weather could include temperatures from 30 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, low humidity (10 percent to 30 percent), and frequent, sometimes severe, afternoon thunderstorms. Activities include horseback riding, rock climbing and rappelling, challenge events, pole climbing, black-powder shooting, 12-gauge trap shooting, .30-06 shooting, trail building, mountain biking, and other activities that have potential for injury. Philmont strives to minimize risks to participants and advisers by emphasizing proper safety precautions. Refer to the Guidebook to Adventure, which is mailed to participants in mid-March, for specific information. Philmont staff instructs participants in safety measures to be followed. Each participant and crew is expected to follow these safety measures and to accept responsibility for the health and safety of each of its members.
