The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension  (1984)

Director:

W.D. Richter

Starring:

Jeff Goldblum · Christopher Lloyd · John Lithgow · Ellen Barkin · Peter Weller · Clancy Brown · Vincent Schiavelli

Muze Description -
A wild, unpredictable and witty sci-fi comedy in which the survival of the entire human race hinges on the efforts of one man--Buckaroo Banzai, assisted by his cronies (Team Banzai) and the Blue Blazer Irregulars. Buckaroo (Peter Weller) possesses an unusual number of professional skills--he's a neurosurgeon, particle physicist, inter-dimensional test pilot, rock star, and comic book hero. While testing his jet-propelled Ford Fiesta, he drives through a rock, accidentally unleashing alien criminals from another planet who were imprisoned there. Suddenly, "Earth saver" seems destined to be added to Buckaroo's list of occupations, but not if evil Dr. Emilio Lizardo (John Lithgow) has his way. Less than successful in its 1984 theatrical run
[being released during the Olympics set BB up for a theatrical failure] , W.D. Richter's wild, anything-goes sci-fi comic book comedy has developed a rabid cult of admirers in the ensuing years [and even became a Saturday morning cartoon series as well as a real comic book series].

BB was versatile, super intelligent, courageous, and worked as part of a team.  Sounds like the traits I want in my Aussie.  Plus the Buckaroo part is consistent with the tradition of giving Aussies Old West names and the total name is consistent with my practice of giving science fiction names to my dogs.

Banzai in Japanese literally means “10,000 years” more loosely used it means forever.

Lit., May you live ten thousand years; -- used in salutation of the emperor and as a battle cry. [Japan]  The Japanese equivalent of The British “Long Live the King”  I like the concept of the battle cry – the summoning of courage to take on a daunting task.  Something a herding dog may have to do when the stock get tough.
