A lift is the initial contact of dog with the sheep that begins their movement. Note how the sheep in the top photo are all beginning to turn to the direction opposite the dog.

To flank is to circle the livestock. In a square flank, the dog first moves directly away from the stock to get himself
farther out before beginning to circle. Ideally, a dog is off contact during a flank. Otherwise, he may cause the sheep to move in the wrong direction while flanking.
