For control of flies so common around livestock and of fleas on your dogs, there are now natural predators available specific to each.

Jerry Stoner and Nancy Mandeville  claim the fly predators have been very effective on their ranch.

I put ointment on the tips of the dog’s ears to prevent fly bites.  Either FlysoffTM or SwatTM work well.

Both come in classic pink or newer neutral.   These 2 products also work on maggots in woulds.

Look in the horse potions section of your local feed store.

FLEAS

I don’t presently have a flea problem, but years ago I thought them unstoppable.    What did establish control for me was:

Simultaneous dog, home, car, and yard treatment.  You must hit all four.  And you must reapply on a regular basis.

Dog – I used to use Zodiac TM dog spray with pyrethrins and  Precor TM.  I was always checked the label carefully, because

Zodiac made different sprays and not all of them had Precor.

Although it worked real well,  I have switched to the more recently developed shoulder applicated control.

This mode is shown to be much more effective than sprays.

I use Biospot TM because it controls a wider range of pests than some of the other brands, including ticks and mosquitoes.

Home & Car – I spray with insecticide plus Precor TM (Insect Growth Regulator).  I hit rugs (including bathmats and dog beds) and all the furniture.

I turn the furniture over and get their under sides as well as the floor beneath them. I pull out the cushions and spray all sides and the matching couch arts.

I get behind and under curtains.

This is very important as fleas actually spend most of their off dog time underneath things, not out in the open.

Yard – I used granular Diazinon in the past.  As I currently don’t have a problem, I am not presently treating the yard.

(But I do continue with house, car, and dog as my dogs do leave the property a lot. Herding trials aren’t too bad for fleas, but herding in big fields can have ticks.

Big dog conformation shows tend to be real bad for fleas.)

If I were to have to yard treat now, I would probably try the flea predators instead of the Diazinon.

MOSQUITOS

Mosquito fish work well in ponds.

For water troughs and pools you will dump on occasion, use Bacillus thuringiensis (”BT”) variety isrealensis (once also called variety sandiegoensis) .  This is a bacterium that kills larval mosquitoes (and black flies) and is safe to put in livestock water.
