Michael grew up in the California surf scene of the early sixties. In high school he took art classes as a way of dodging anything more difficult. But there he discovered something. He learned the beginnings of communicating in images. This was a gateway. It became like Isaac Newton's quest for the recreation of the Philosopher's Stone the Elixir of Life. A transmutation was in progress.

Like Isaac Newton, he struggled for years to discover the formulary. In the forges of life, he melded shape and form with the hammer and anvil of the brush and palette knife. He punched images on canvas like a prizefighter. He struggled learning the alchemy of color. Success and failure followed him as he moved to Oregon the land of the individual's quests.

He knew that Artists do not become rich and very few become famous in their own time. But he refused to give up even as Newton had. He became a relentless seeker. And somewhere in the wanderings he understood. Art is a gateway to the soul! But not just to his soul but to the communal soul of humanity.

Those that have the price can travel the path. But then came the question, “Why should only the rich be capable of that?”. His travels returned him to California. And he has a mission. The Plein Air movement drew him in remembrances of the unfettered freeness of Oregon. And so he paints where art is not for a showing of wealth or pompous posturing, but a sharing for all - rich or poor. His art and his humor and his Magnum Opus sustains him.

His style is derived from the turn of the century Plein Air (French for "in the open air") painters that capture their themes on location. This art movement, begun in France in the early 1700's, includes painting subjects in their natural exterior setting unadorned by artificially arranged poses. It is the artistic interpretation of nature, in a context framed by light, sound, smell, taste, movement, and the weather!

*Michael's paintings have been purchased for the movie set of "Meet the Fockers" (see In the Movies).

Many artists have "prints" made of their original works in an effort to offer low cost alternatives. This also eases the creative strain. Michael paints 250 to 270 original paintings a year and does not sell reproductions of his works. He prefers to spend all his energy on original oils. He offers originals at reasonable price points! For him original means original. The Paintings are like no other!

PAINTING OF THE MONTH  "La Jolla Cove"  - SEPT 2009

Painting of the Month for Sept 09

I painted this on location just south of La Jolla Cove.

The surf was dramatic. But it was the light off the water that drew me.

It had a certain grace - hmmm - hard to put into words.

I was off on a painting trip to Moro Bay returning with some great pieces. Next I'm heading up to Oregon for 10 days or so.
