The
TOMY SL- Series Front & Rear Lighted Cars...
These (6) cars are the Front & Rear
Lighted TOMY's. They use standard chassis' and two however, (the
Kenwood & the Silk-Cut),
are Extremely Rare! Once thought to be "Set Only" cars, These
were actually also available as a Scarce Release "SL" (Special
Lighted) series. The "SL" Series came in Pit-Cases similar to the EX
Series except they were numbered SL-001, SL-002, SL-003 etc... These (2) cars in
there "SL" Pit cases are even more rare than the Set-Only
versions. So much so, that Most people have Never even seen the
"SL" cases. These Lighted cars have slightly larger bodies
to accommodate the Lighting mechanism, but are still Very Cool looking! A
must for any Collection!, thanks to Jeff Vladika of AFXRacing for this
info.
Tomy
EX Primus Series.....
About
1990, Tomy released the best-detailed HO
slot cars ever produced, the EX Primus series in the US and Japan. AFX
collectors often refer to these cars as the
EX Series
due to their Tomy
catalog numbers; EX001 through EX018. These cars came attractively
packaged in hard plastic cases with a pit-wall base. By the time Tomy was
done, it had released 19 different cars. Two different classes of cars
where produced. The first six were Group-C cars and the rest were Formula 1,
all on the Super G+ chassis. At the top of the Bill Board is a vinyl
decal. This decal came in two types. One had a large word "Shell" in the middle
with AFX HO scale racing on each side. The other (Most
Common)
had a large AFX in the center and TOMY King of Racing Cars on the left
and TOMY Feel the Heart of GP on the right. Inside the case the car
was covered with a lightweight clear plastic cover. Covering the whole
case was clear Plexiglas top to keep the dust out. On the underside is
the Japanese paperwork.
Tomy had two productions. One for sale only in Japan, and the other for export
to the US and Europe. These two production were different in chassis and
in paperwork. The bodies remained the same with the exception of the EX-007 McLaren MP4/5-Marlboro
. The McLaren MP4/5-Marlboro was never released from Japan due the law in the
United States prohibiting the advertisement of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Sex on
Toys (Advertising & Promotion Law of 1977). A year or two later, Tomy HQ's decided to allow the Europe Tomy
manufacture companies to product the Japanese version chassis for sale and
package in Europe.
These
are some of the most sought after Tomy cars ever produced. Several of
the cars in this series command over $75.00 when available in mint
condition. These cars can occasionally be found for sale at auctions such
as eBay, but be prepared to pay quite a bit for
mint unopened
boxes., thanks to Jeff Vladika of AFXRacing for this info.
How do you know if you have a
Mint complete EX package car & case.
Well, it
easy.
1. In
the bottom of the case, there is the paper work. Two sheets of Paper, one
larger
than the other. There is a cardboard card with Japanese writing.
That cardboard
will
have that case number either near the top (Japanese Version), or you will find it
under the bar
code, (US Version) example 9207 would be the EX-007.
2. The
BillBoard will have a body clip in the back for all the F1 Indy's and there
shouldn't
be any for the GTP (because they are using the clip on the chassis).
3.
First, the car is secured with a Grey wire tie wrap, Now the case, I have just learned
that there is a certain pattern that was
used for taping the case. the smaller plastic
lid that
covers the car is taped
to the bottom platform on one side. The Case lid is
also taped on each side
and normally taped over the tape that was used for the
smaller plastic
lid.
4. The car chassis, The Japanese Non-export : EX Series chassis should have a
rear
axle retainer. It is made of medal. The paperwork will show the picture
of the rear
axle retainer. Also the Japanese Non-export has stronger magnets. I found that
the majority of all the
car I purchased, did not have them. But look at the paper work
that came with
the car, and compare them to another Tomy SG+. Japanese EX Series
are the only
one to have them. These Rear Axle Retainers are easy to find, between
$1.50 to $2.00 ea.
The Japanese export for US: The chassis does not have the rear
axle retainer
and the paperwork does not show a picture of the rear axle retainer.
