The
TYCO 440 Magnum Chassis (1981)
While the Curvehugger HP2 chassis of 1980 was a pretty good chassis
by the standards of the time, it suffered from one serious problem in
terms of overall H.O. slotcar design. It was simply too bulky to use on
modern Indycar / F-1 reproductions. Probably taking notice of Aurora's AFX
G-Plus design of 1976, TYCO finally introduced it's first integrated
in-line motor chassis design in 1981, the 440 Magnum chassis. This
low-profile chassis outperformed anything tyco had ever made due to low
mass, high power, & good traction magnetics. The resulting Indy/F-1
bodies it allowed looked quite good if not perfect. This chassis cost more
to make than the standard CHHP2 chassis, so it was sold at a premium in
addition the the CHHP2 rather than replacing it. This marked the beginning
of the high performance/high cost and lower performance/lower cost chassis
choice era at TYCO.
