The TYCO Curvehugger HP2 Chassis (1978)

The TYCO Curvehugger HP2 Chassis (1978)

Variations 1 & 2 without traction magnets

The first 2 varieties of the Curvehugger HP2 chassis were very similar the original Curvehugger with a few exceptions. The CHHP2 has a different (improved) motor, larger front wheels/tires, an aluminum guide pin & light gray plastic for the main chassis. Variety 1 had the rear axle track narrower than the front axle, but variety 2 had the rear axle track equal to the front axle track ( ideal in my opinion).

Variation 3 with traction magnets (1980)

This was a very significant advance in H.O. slotcar design in that it was the first production chassis to use magnets dedicated only to traction ( no motor function ). Gone are the flux collectors used on the previous designs. Instead, 2 small magnets are mounted on the rear of the chassis just ahead of the rear axle to attract the chassis to the power rails. Every performance H.O. chassis made since this one have used this ground breaking design feature. Other changes from variety 2 CHHP2 include another motor change, a guide flag rather than a guide pin, and a modified motor pinion gear & spacer on the rear axle to keep them meshed. The Final version of the CHHP2 has the rear axle track wider than the front axle for the very first time which looks good on a hot rod, but somewhat detracts from scale accuracy on street cars.
