THIS ALWAYS WORKS!
STRETCHING
Everyone seems to agree that stretching the legs, calfs, feet or ankles will
help WHILE those parts are being stretched. The problem is, the RLS often
returns as soon as you stop stretching. Some people stretch until their
muscles are overly exhausted. Others, stretch and then race to get
to sleep before the RLS starts again. But the stretching, itself, WILL stop
the funny sensations.
WALKING
The universal cure for the symptoms of RLS is to WALK. The newsletter for
the RLS Foundation is even called "Nightwalkers". If we are moving, we
usually do not feel the sensations. This might be good, if we could sleep
walk...but so far, we haven't figured out how to walk and catch up on our
sleep, at the same time.
ENGROSSING YOUR MIND
The third most popular trick is to get totally engrossed in a mental activity.
Getting very involved in computer work, piano playing, a great book, or paying
bills, are just some of the activities that make the RLS go away. When experiencing
a severe episode of RLS, however, you may not be able to sit at the activity
long enough to get mentally engrossed. When I first sit down to the computer, during
a bad RLS episode, if the computer is slow to download or
refresh the screen, I could go nuts!
