CONCENTRATION

Based on my theory of overpowering useless brain impulses, I've found I can control my RLS sensations by concentrating on details. Sometimes it's like the cloud image at the top of this page....I'm finding animals in the clouds, or meaning in an article, or studying makeup on a movie actor.

READING

For many years, I wasn't able to sit and quietly read the newspaper. As soon as I tried, the RLS would begin and panic would set in. I'd instinctually read faster and faster, barely getting any information, and finally giving up and putting the paper down.

Now, when it starts, I force myself to choose an article and read it thoroughly, concentrating on the descriptions and imagining every scene in detail. It's as if skimming the paper makes it worse, but slowing down and really concentrating on one good article will over power the desire to move. Before long, I calm down, and can read the rest of it quietly.

This takes great faith and determination. If I panic and don't believe it will work, it won't.

TELEVISION and THEATER

For many RLS sufferers, there is nothing more frustrating than watching television or going to a movie. The only possible exception is flying in an airplane and dealing with the small seats and lack of leg room...but that's another story. While I'm watching a movie or television program my RLS will kick up 90% of the time.

When the RLS kicks up, I used to just get up, walk around, do dishes, change the laundry. . .ANYTHING to be moving. In other words, I used to panic. Now, I tell myself, "CONCENTRATE ON THE MOVIE!!!!!" I start watching the makeup on the actors, the movements, really listening to the conversation, guessing what will happen next. Before long, I realize my legs have relaxed. It works!

I've also found there are certain DISTRACTIONSand AROMAS that help me relax and focus on the show. Click on these two links to learn more.

MUSIC

Listening to music has become a great aid in falling asleep. I have a whole section on this, if you click HERE.

WARNING!!

REMEMBER: It is VITAL you begin your concentration tactics EARLY!! Do NOT let your RLS episode go too far, before focusing on your details or subject of concentration. If you wait too long, panic will set in, and you'll be unable to sit still long enough to focus. It's got to be a matter of thinking, "Oh wow, my RLS is acting up. . .Okay...time to concentrate!"

If you waited too long, and the concentration does NOT work, be sure to use distraction techniques. Get up and walk, do chores, do an activity, or whatever it takes to settle the RLS as quickly as possible. Then, try to be still and concentrate, again.
