~ ~THYROID CANCER and SCHOOL~ ~

CONSIDER THE VARIABLES

1. What other responsibilities do you have? (children, caregiving, job, atheletic teams) Julie, my daughter, had to go to classes, spend many hours on landscape architecture projects, and spend about 3 hrs each weekday in track practice and/or weight training. During the winter and spring, she had to spend weekends travelling to, and performing in, track meets. Other than this, she was only responsible to herself.

2. What other health or age issues do you have? Julie was 21 years old when diagnosed, and was totally healthy, except for the thyroid cancer issues.

3. How much support do you have, for cooking, driving while hypo, housework, getting to doctors appointments, etc? Julie had a boyfriend that was by her side, every minute. He cooked, drove her places, and was always there for the details. I helped from long distance, sending LID (Low Iodine Diet) food packages, gathering information, and arranging surgeries, treatments, etc. SHE, just had to concentrate on school, track and her health....which was plenty to keep her busy and wear her out.

4. How much flexibility do you have, if you can't make it to class, or to work, or if you need to be late with an assignment? People tend to have an easier time of it, if they are in their last years of a bachelors program, or in a graduate program. My daughter thought it would have been much harder in her freshman year, to get cooperation with the professors.
