Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Yulee Railroad Days?

A: Yulee Railroad Days celebrates the life and accomplishments of David Levy Yulee, first U.S. Senator from the State of Florida, and his Florida Railroad, the first cross-state railway in the state. Held in the City of Archer annually for eight years, in 2004 the celebration expands throughout Alachua County, including events in many towns impacted by his and other railroads. Over the course of the eight-year period it took for the Florida RR to be built, the celebration will stretch from Fernandina on the Atlantic Coast to Cedar Key on the Gulf, creating a linear festival in which towns and organizations will honor railroad history in Northeast and North Central Florida in their own way.

Q: Does the town of Yulee have anything to do with this?

A: The town of Yulee was originally called Hart's Road. It was where the Florida Railroad crossed the highway from Jacksonville to St. Marys, Georgia. Harts Road was named for Isaiah D. Hart, who in 1839, persuaded Congress to build a road from Jacksonville to St. Marys, Georgia. The name was changed to Yulee in 1893.Other towns along the route were named for people associated with the railroad or David Yulee: Callahan was named for the contractor who built part of the road, Archer for James T. Archer, a close friend of Yulee's, and Bronson for U.S. Judge Isaac Bronson, before whom Yulee practiced law when he was a young attorney.

Q: When was the name of the Florida Railroad changed? I can't find it on the map.

A: The name changed eight times between 1853 and 1986: Florida Railroad 1853-1872
Atlantic, Gulf & West India Transit 1872-1881
Florida Transit RR 1881-1884
Florida Transit and Peninsular RR 1883-1884
Florida Railway and Navigation Co. 1884-1888
(people usually called it "The Transit")
Florida Central & Peninsular RR 1888-1903
Seaboard Air Line RR 1903-1967
Seaboard Coast Line Railroad 1967-1986
(some people called it the "Seabo'")
CSX Transportation 1986-present

Q: Where does the Yulee Railroad Days train go, and how much does it cost?

A: Yulee Railroad Days is a linear festival that consists of a series of events throughout North Central Florida. None of these events at present involve train rides.

Q: How does my town or organization get involved in an event in our community?

A: Organizations have begun planning for the 2004 Yulee Railroad Days. You can join an existing celebration or create one of your own. See the Events page for ideas on the kind of event your community might create and the Participant Agreement. For more information, contact us at:

dentonph@bellsouth.net

Q: How do I find out if there is an event already scheduled in my community?

A: Check out the Events page on this website. You may also contact the Event Coordinator at:

dentonph@bellsouth.net

Q: There's already one event going on in my community. Can there be another one?

A: Sure - the more, the merrier! Local history reenactments, model train shows, museum special exhibitions, train-themed music performances, children's events, genealogy programs, sporting events, historic building tours, native plant programs, the list is endless.

Q: Does an event have to be about trains?

A: Not directly, but the festival serves to emphasize how railroads shaped the North Florida area, either creating towns in their paths or isolating those that weren't. Trains opened up many areas of the country to development and provided transportation into and out of these new population centers, promoting growth, creating markets, and providing outlets for local industry and agriculture

Q: What kind of support will YRRD give our event?

A: Yulee Railroads Days serves to promote and encourage the efforts of organizations and municipalities hosting events during the annual Yulee Railroad Days festival. We market and advertise all YRRD events throughout Florida and beyond. We are a clearinghouse for information affecting events, including potential scheduling conflicts. We do not obtain permissions, permits, licenses, or insurance for events. Those duties are the responsibility of each organizing committee.

Q: Do events have to take place all three days?

A: No, an event may take place on any or all of the three days.

Q: We can't hold an event this year. Can we register for next year?

A: By all means. Please contact us at: dentonph@bellsouth.net

or click on the printable Participation Form. We look forward to hearing from you.
