Relay 2004
In 2004, the Gainesville Sports Organizing Committee staged a relay in order to commemorate the first train trip across Florida, from Fernandina Beach to Cedar Key. That first train finally made the cross-state trip on March 1, 1861 after the railroad had been under construction for eight years.
12 elite riders pedaled their way across the Sunshine State at the pace of the original train, 14.5 mph. They started in Fernandina Beach at 7:00am and finished in Cedar Key before sunset on June 5th, 2004.
David Levy Yulee’s accomplishments have been celebrated annually in the city of Archer since 1995. In 2004, Yulee Railroad Days became a multi-city festival, expanding throughout Alachua County and beyond. With the addition of funding from the Alachua County Visitors and Convention Bureau, the Yulee Railroad Days Committee joined with the Gainesville Sports Organizing Committee to create a cross-state bicycle ride and bicycle relay along the old route of Yulee’s Florida Railroad, beginning at sunrise in Fernandina Beach and ending as the sun set into the Gulf of Mexico in Cedar Key.
The 2004 ride featured recreational and relay cyclists riding one or all of the three segments of the 159 mile ride on Saturday, June 5 and on Sunday, June 6. In addition, on Saturday 12 elite riders made the ride from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico at the 14˝ mph pace at which the 19th Century trains once crossed the state.
