Blizzard of 2003

February 18th

A snowplow arrives, but we're only important enough to merit one lane. Below, Terri pauses outside our house.

Further down the street, the plowing was more cursory...

The creek was looking picturesque...

A very long melt is at least starting...

Had to clear out another twelve feet into the road to reach the plowed lane, but at least we can now escape by car, sort of. Cars have to take turns coming in and out, and frequently enter into driveways temporarily.

February 17th, it's finally all over

The storm lasted close to 36 hours and dumped about 21 inches of snow. It might have been more except it turned to sleet during the night, which gave us "only" two inches of hard packed stuff instead. Removing it was no fun. Still no snowplow! May be a day or two ... we are landlocked unless we want to walk somewhere.

Front porch is cleared...

Victory ... the driveway is done! Mark is grateful he's been working out on all those weight training machines at his health club. It likely made the difference! However, there is no place to go. If we attempted to leave the driveway we would get stuck in 18 inches of snow. This is the only time I ever wanted an SUV, or a 4-wheel drive car! Fortunately we are well stocked!

Front sidewalk is clear, looking west on Emerald Chase Drive...

View of the house. One snow pile made it to six feet!

Parts of our house can be hard to see from the road!

Another view of our driveway...

Waiting for the snowplow. It may be a couple days. To keep taxes low they have to skip a few things here in Virginia, like buying enough snowplows to handle major snowstorms!
