Food
Cravings
In
one sense this can be very simple, if you are malabsorbing because of
intestinal injury, then you can’t get enough energy from the carbs, fats, or
proteins you eat. Then you will feel
tired and hungry between meals, so you eat.
The
autoimmune factors of gluten intolerance can cause pain. You may find certain foods (often dairy or wheat)
have some mild doping or pain killing effect and begin to crave those.
Some
milder allergic food reactions may trigger red blood cells to release stores of
serotonin, having the effect of an antidepressant medication.
After
a time, you (or your body) learn what foods make you feel better. Then, when you are frequently tired, hungry,
or hurting, you frequently crave your “comfort” foods.
If
your comfort foods are high in simple carbs or fats, you run into problems with
obesity and diabetes. If your comfort
foods are low in vitamins, then you add malnutrition to your
malabsorption. If your comfort foods
have some toxic properties, then you begin to poison yourself.
