Notes for JOHN (III) LEETE:

Fifty Great Migration Colonists to New England and their Origins:

JOHN LEETE of Eversden, Cambridgeshire, was apparently born about 1500. In the Lay Subsidy (tax) of 1522, a John Leete was assessed at £6 for goods on the Kingston roll. It is possible that this was actually his father of the same name, for John was quite young then; probably not yet married. On the other hand, if his father was then dead, then he, even though a young man, might well have come into his estate and been subject to the tax. John Leete was taxed in the Subsidies of 1540 against Little Eversden, and in 1542 at Great Eversden. He was buried at Little Eversden on 25 December 1551. In 1594, his grandson, Giles Leete of Shelland, sued for recovery of the title deeds of his (the grandson's) father's estate in Kingston, Eversden and Tofts. These three parishes are adjacent to each other. By about 1526, John Leete married Helen (or Ellen) Burgoyne. On 10 October 1539, Ellen was described as a "gentlewoman" when she was named as godmother in the baptismal record of Alice Sutton at Toft. Administration on the estate of Helen Leete, widow, of Eversden, was granted to her son Thomas Leete on 2 May 1564.

10 November 1549 - Deed of sale by Walter Barnarde of East Hatley, husbandman, of £40 worth of lands, etc. in Great and Little Eversden inherited from his father Thomas Barnarde, to John Lete. (Queen's College, Cambridge University Archives, Eversden Deed 661) 20 December 1549 - Grant by William son of Oliver Taunte, deceased, late of Little Eversden, to John Lete, gentleman, Thomas Hinde, clerk, Alex. Graunden, Edmund Lete, John Reynolde, Robert Harwarde, Cuthbert Lindsey, Christopher Rogers, and other parishioners of Little Eversden of a tenement in Little Eversden and 8 acres, 1 rood in Great and Little Eversden, formerly Henry Taunte's.(Deed 662)

10 August 1550 - Deed of sale by Christopher Rogers of Little Eversden, husbandman, to Edmund Leete of Great Eversden, yeoman, of ½ acre in Little Eversden. (Deed 663)

1 December 1557 - Lease by the College of Saint John to Thomas Leete of Little Eversden, yeoman, of the manor place called the Lordship Place in Little Eversden, together with other lands for 40 years at annual rent of £ 13.1 Os. and also one able and sufficient bore for brawne or 10s. at Christmas annually. (Deed 670)

1 December 1557 - Bond in £20 in regard to above (Deed 671)

26 April 1558 - Deed of sale by Thomas Lete of Little Eversden, gentleman, to the College of Saint John for £60 of certain lands in Great and Little Eversden. Full terrier attached; also bond of £100. (Deed 672)

30 April 1558- Grant of above land to college and livery of seisin. (Deed 673)

20 April 1561 - Deed of sale. Thomas Lete of Little Eversden, gentleman, to Harry Scotte of Great Eversden, of 1½ acres of pasture in Great Eversden. (Deed 676)

The name Leete seems to derive from or have the meaning of light. This is evident from the family coat of arms which includes three lighted matches (fuses) and a lamp in the crest. The Leete family is an ancient one that can be traced back to before the Norman conquest of England. According to the Domesday Survey, Leit was a thane of Edward the Confessor, King of England from 1042 until his death 5 January 1065/6. The manor of Foxcote in Buckinghamshire, worth £3 annually, is mentioned as being formerly held by Leit.

[The Family Face, by Michael Leete, http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/l/e/e/Michael-Leete/index.html?Welcome=991659983 ]

In the words of Joseph Leete, in the first edition, 'The John Leete whose name stands at the head of the Eversden pedigree was born anterior to the origin of parish registers, or the Visitations of Heralds' and 'we think it reasonable to conclude that John Leete, whose name stands at the head of the pedigree, was recognized during his lifetime as the head of the family.' He will have been born about the year 1500. His name is mentioned in the records of the Monastery of St Albans in 1544; he had a registered Swan Mark[1]; he was named in the Will of his son Edmond in August 1551 and a fragment of his own Will, proved in 1553, has been found in Cambridge. He was buried at Little Eversden on Christmas Day, 1551. Above all, he is named in two Visitations dated 1612 and 1619 and, by extension, heads the record of 1684. His wife was Ellen (or Helen) Burgoyne whose estate, surprisingly, was Administered by her youngest son Thomas in 1564 rather than the older Robert, then living in Cambridge. Put at its lowest, this may suggest that Thomas was more conveniently placed than at Bury St Edmunds. Searches for clues among the antecedents of the Burgoyne family to connect the Eversden and Oakington Branches produced a rare example of dating a baptism before the Parish Registers were ordered to be kept. It relates to a writ to prove the age of Richard Burgoyne, son and heir of John Burgoyne: 'He was born at Cambridge 20 Dec, 20 Edw IV and baptized in the church of St Botolph in that town the same day, as John Rumbold, aged 45 and more remembers ... Joan, daughter of Henry Lete (aged 59 and more) who is 21 and more, was born the same year.[2]' In other words, Joan Lete was born in 1480 and Henry Lete, her father, was born in 1443. It also seems probable that the witnesses will have had a good reason to recollect the event if they were to be believed. For instance, that a blood relationship existed between them.

Visitations began in 1529-30 during the reign of Henry VIII. The earliest official Visitation that we have for the family is that of Suffolk in 1612. This Visitation named the three generations to 'John Lete of Berry St Edmond', the son of Thomas Leete and grandson of John Leete of Eversden. The 1619 Visitation of Cambridgeshire was entered on the claim of Giles Leete of Kingston, another grandson, and this Visitation is extended by the version in the Harleian Manuscripts to a Visitation of 1575. The Visitation that falls between 1612 and 1619, that of Huntingdonshire in 1613, is headed by Thomas Leete of Oakington and the claimant was his son, John Leete 'de Dodington, in com. Hunt.'

John Leete of Eversden had five sons. Very little is know about the second and third except that the 1551 Will of Edmond mentioned his brother Henry who was, presumably, living at that time. Thomas Leete, the youngest, is discussed in the Chapter on the Oakington Branch and the remaining two, William and Robert, had families that merit separate descriptions.

"In the Lay Subsidy (tax) of 1522, a John Leete was assessed at£6 for goods on the Kingston roll. It is possible that this was actually his father of the same name, for John was quite young then; probably not yet married. (Threlfall, p. 268) Another source lists Ellen Burgoyne's husband as "John DELEEDS", son of William LEEDS, born about 1430 in Everden, Cambridge, England. Son of William DE LEEDS, born about 1370 of Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Son of Roger DE LEEDS, born about 1342 of Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Son of Roger DE LEEDS, born about 1327 in Holbek, Yorkshire, England. (Barbara Lamb Jones)

was appointed Vicar at Woolverstone, Suffolk County, England in 1615.

In 1636 he was suspended by the bishop for unspecified reasons and

came soon after to Watertown, Massachusetts. He removed to Hampton

where he occasionally was "teaching" at the local church. The book

says "issues" rose between him and the pastor of the same church over

those teachings.

9.  PHEBE6 LEETE (ROBERT5, JOHN (III)4, THOMAS (II)3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born December 20, 1585 in Little Eversden, Cambridgeshire, England, and died Bef. 1641 in England.  She married GEORGE PARKHURST Abt. 1611 in England, son of JOHN PARKHURST and SARAH UNKNOWN.  He was born Abt. 1588 in Ipswich, Co. Suffolk, England, and died June 18, 1675 in Ipswich, Co. Suffolk, England.

Notes for PHEBE LEETE:

Phebe (Phebe "unknown" in some early Parkhurst genealogies) was the youngest of seven children.  She had a sister, Ruth, wife of Reverend Timothy Dalton, Rector of Woolverstone, which is five miles from Ipswich, England.  Timothy Dalton and Ruth Leete were married on June 13, 1615 at Gislingham, Suffolk.  Ruth died in New Hampshire without surviving children and left legacies to six Parkhurst children of her sister, Phebe, suggesting that Phebe's children Samuel, John, and Abigail had died young.

Notes for GEORGE PARKHURST:

George was born during 1588 possibly in May, probably in Ipswich, England.  George and his wife, Phebe Leete, lived in Ipswich where their nine children were baptized, but after the last child was baptized there is no record of them in Ipswich and they may have lived elsewhere until their departure for New England.

George's arrival date in New England can be estimated by the marriage contracted by his children in Massachusetts prior to 1640.  George first appears on record in New England at Watertown, MA in 1642 when it was ordered that a highway should be laid out to his house.  He is not mentioned in the four grants of land made in Watertown between 7/25/1636 and 4/9/1638.  Whether he brought with him his wife, Phebe, is unknown.  If he brought her she died shortly afterwards, for about 1644, he married his second wife, Susanna Simson, the widow of John Simson, (who was buried at Watertown on 6/10/1643, leaving two sons and three daughters).

The time period when George and Susanna were married can be determined by sales of Simson's real estate.  Susanna held title after John's death and deeded some of the land on 11/9/1643.  George sold two acres of Simson's land on 11/16/1644, having acquired title by his marriage to Susanna.  They were living in Boston by 1645 as evidenced by a deed George made there on 10/4/1645 selling six more acres in Watertown.

On 6/13/1655, George sold the last 12 acres of what had been John Simson's land for 21 pounds.  This conveyance was made by permission of the General Court, granted 5/23/1655 in response to his petition in which he asserts that he was then "near 67 years old", that he and his wife, who was in England, and most of her children were in destitute condition, that she had had 10 children during her 20 years of residence in America - seven sons and three daughters (five sons by Parkhurst therefore), that she had gone to London, England with six of her children but found her mother, brothers and sisters were unable to do what she had expected, that four of her children had remained in America, and that the petitioner desired to sell the land (apparently all that remained) in order that he might go to the aid of his wife.  George probably returned to England as soon as possible after the deed of 6/13/1655, his last act on record in New England.

George was probably the "old George Parkhurst" buried 6/18/1675 at Saint Lawrence, Ipswich, England.  He may have been living with his cousins Nathanial Parkhurst, who had six hearths in the Suffolk Hearth Tax of 1674.

Notes for MARY PARKHURST:

Mary's husband, Thomas Carter, was living in Watertown, MA before 1637.  Mary's first child was born early in August 1640 in Watertown.  This places Mary in Watertown by 1639.  She probably arrived with her father and some of her siblings and this helps to date the arrival time of George and his family to 1638 or 1639.

Notes for JOSEPH PARKHURST:

Joseph probably came to Watertown, MA before 1640 with his father and siblings.  Joseph was a proprietor (original settler) of the New Field (a new district or "town") in Chelmsford, MA and was allotted 12 acres on 3/12/1666/67.  His house lot was located "west by town highway to the mill, north by land of Thomas Sewell, east by town common, south by land of John Wright".  This location is now on Stedman Street, Lowell, MA.

On the ministerial tax list of 1672, Joseph was listed with eight acres (tillable?), three cows, two oxen (1 - 2 years old), two yearlings, five swine, and one horse.  Sometime later Joseph moved to the Stoney Brook district, which is now in Westford, where he died.
