Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN (POSSIBLY)1 MCCALL was born Abt. 1749 in Ireland, and died Bef. 1790 in Salem, Westmoreland Co, PA.  He married MARTHA (POSSIBLY) UNKNOWN.  She was born Abt. 1749 in Ireland, and died Abt. 1798 in Salem, Westmoreland Co, PA.

Children of JOHN MCCALL and MARTHA UNKNOWN are:

                   i.    ROBERT2 MCCALL, b. Abt. 1765, Pennsylvania; d. Abt. 1809, Middlesex Twp, Butler Co,  PA.

ii.    SON MCCALL, b. Bef. 1774.

                 vi.    DAUGHTER MCCALL.

Generation No. 2

2.  ROBERT2 MCCALL (JOHN (POSSIBLY)1) was born Abt. 1765 in Pennsylvania, and died Abt. 1809 in Middlesex Twp, Butler Co,  PA.  He married ELIZABETH YOUNG Abt. 1789 in Salem Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA, daughter of THOMAS YOUNG and JENNETT UNKNOWN.  She was born Abt. 1769 in Pennsylvania, and died 1834 in Freeport, Armstrong Co, PA.

Notes for ROBERT MCCALL:

Robert McCALL was married to Elizabeth YOUNG abt 1789 Salem Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA.  They supposedly lived near the YOUNG farm which is near the Bull Creek Pres Church.  Neighbors were Robert Elliot & Martha McCall.  Robert Elliot moved to Buffalo Twp, Butler Co, PA 1796.  Robert & Elizabeth moved to Buffalo Twp, Butler Co, PA 1798 & bought 400 acres.  They were neighbors with Robert ElLLIOT & James McKEE.  They had five kids at this time.  1803 & 1804, Robert is listed in the Buffalo Twp tax records, then he disappears.  According to a family journal & a Butler Co history, Robert was killed by a falling tree 1802/1804 on the Robert ELLIOT farm.  We knew it wasn't either of these dates as he was taxed 1804.  1804, the town boundary lines changed.  His farm was then after in Middlesex Twp.  So we found him there, 1805-1809.  Then he is gone.  So 1809 is when I believe he actually died.  Elizabeth is in the 1810 census as head of household with 8 kids, listed as E McCool  In 1814, her son, John & daughter Susannah buy 110 acres of the farm.  1817 John pays off other siblings (ie Susannah, James, Margaret) for their portion of the 110 acres.  (Don't know what happened to the other 300 acres yet.)  Two of the eight kids were under age at this time.  I believe the 3rd son died before 1810 as he is not listed in the 1810 census with Elizabeth.  So we have uncovered the following children:

John b 30 July 1791 Salem Twp married to Susan RIDDLE (my line)

Thomas b 1793 Salem Twp married to Sarah & Mary J

James b 30 Jun 1794 Salem Twp married to Mary Pragus MILLER

Susannah of age by 1814 - b abt 1796

Margaret of age by 1817 - b abt 1797

Son b bet 1798 & 1804 & probably died bef 1810

David b 17 Jun 1804 Buffalo Twp, married to Elizabeth MILLER

Jane b 1807 Buffalo Twp, married to Joesph B MILLER (brother to Elizabeth)

Elizabeth is said to have married a "Mr McKEE" after Robert died, & moved to and died in Freeport.  They supposedly had one son.  The neighbor, James McKEE, is prime candidate for husband #2.  He is listed in the 1803 taxes as a single man.  I have found that he sold his farm to a CUNNINGHAM & he is not listed in the 1810 census for Buffalo Twp.

Sugar Creek

A Small Remnant of the Parent Township-Original Owners-Conveyances-Ezekiel Lewis and other Pioneers-The Middlesex Presbyterian Church-St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church-The Donation Lands-Lutheran Church-Robert Orr, Sr.-Orrsville-Damages of the Tornado of 1860-Sugar Creek and Phillipsburg Ferry Company-Templeton Oilwell-Census and School Statistics-Geology.

Adjoining the Nelson-Campbell tract on the south is one, a rectangular parallelogram, surveyed by Gapen, deputy surveyor, to Joseph Irwin as containing 396 acres and 18 perches, who perhaps conveyed his interest to McCall. James and William Blain made an improvement and settlement on it in August, 1797, and to whom it was surveyed by Ross, deputy surveyor, as containing 410 acres and 20 perches, November 17, 1803. The whole of the Blain interest seems to have become vested in James, for McCall, to whom the patent was granted October 2, 1828, conveyed 200 acres to him, June 22, 1829, for $1, and Blain by his will, dated March 27, and registered December 6, 1815, devised his purpart equally to his sons, James, John and William. The two last-named conveyed their interests to their brother James, March 3, 1839, for $150 each.

Adjoining the western part of that Irwin-McCall-Blain tract on the north and “Lewisburgh” on the west, its northern boundary being the dividing line between the depreciation and donation lands, is an incompletely defined one, nearly a rectangular parallelogram, on the Gapen map, to which on it Edward McKee appears to have had a claim. John Davis had a subsequent interest in it, against whom Thomas Collins had a judgment for $300 of debt, and $5.20 of costs. By virtue of a vend. ex. Thereon, Alexander Johnston, sheriff of Westmoreland county, sold it to Nicholas Day as containing 200 acres more or less, for $403, and conveyed it to him June 30, 1808, which the latter conveyed to James Fulton, October 31, for $500. On the other map it appears as belonging to Fulton’s heirs, to whom it still chiefly belongs, and as containing 182 acres. Nicholas Snow was first assessed as a blacksmith on this tract, in 1810, who is said to have been the first one within the present limits of Sugar Creek township.

Notes for JESSE MAXWELL:

Taken from newspaper clipping, Feb 1902, Port Byron, IL.

"Saturday, February 1st, Mr and Mrs Jesse Maxwell will celebrate their sixtieth Wedding Anniversary at their home in this village.  They have made no extensive preparations for observing the event, but will serve a dinner at which their immediate family will be present.

Jesse Maxwell was born in Westmoreland County, PA., Aug 8th, 1817.  Anna McCall was born in Butler County, PA., Jan 4, 1819.  They were married Feb 1, 1842 at Salem, PA., left Greenburg April 15, 1844, arrived in Rock Island April 28, 1844 and remaining there three years.  They then moved to a farm which Mr. Maxwell purchased in Zuma Township.  They moved to Port Byron in September, 1864, he buying the Port Byron-LeClaire ferry boat which he operated for about two years.  After disposing of this he was associated with D. S. Metzgar in a stock and grain business which they carried on during the war.  Later he became owner of a general store and formed a partnership with his son John, which was disposed of after the laters death.  Mr. Maxwell then bought the Port Byron House and after conducting it for some time leased the premises and a short time after it was destroyed by fire.  Mr. Maxwell was then urged to enter the hotel business again and he built an addition to his private dwelling which he operated as the Maxwell House and only recently disposed of the property, though the hotel has not been under his management for several years.

To Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell eleven children were born, three dying in infancy, and John O. at the age of 28, Jesse N. at the age of 36.  Six are living, as follows; Mary, wife of George D. Moore, of Port Byron, Agnes, wife of A. A. Olin, of Port Byron, Lizzie, wife of Frank E. Rogers, of Port Byron, Ida, wife of W. D. Hall, of Port Byron, Joseph A., of Rock Island, and Thomas of Memphis, Tenn.  They have sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  Two of the grandchildren, Walter E. Rogers and George D. Olin are in Cuba with the United States troops.

Mr Maxwell comes from a family of sixteen children - eight daughters and eight sons.  He is the only surviving son; one daughter, Mrs. J. Stoffer, of Cedar Junction, Kansas, 88 years of age, is also living.  In Mrs. Maxwell's family there were seven children, five of whom are living - Hugh McCall of Coe Township, Thomas of Port Byron, William of Greeley, Colo., and Eliza Marshall of Chicago.  Mrs. Maxwell comes from a remarkably long lived race.  Her parents died at the ages of 76 and 92 years, and her grandparents attained the ages of 99 and 101 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell readily recall the important happenings in the county's early history.  Mr. Maxwell witnessed the execution of the Col Davenport's murderers, he being one of the guards, and it was his sister and Mrs. Maxwell who first discovered the bloody clothing left by the murderers on the grounds  in Rock Island where the Wagner brewery now stands.

Mr. and Mrs Maxwell are both members of the Port Byron Congressional Church.  The (unreadable) ...ship, and Mrs. Maxwell the (unreadable) members."
