Dar was diagnosed with prostate cancer and during a check-up was found to have a cancerous fetal tumor attached to his colon. This was only a year or two before his death.

He was a member of the " Metropolitan Police Force" Scotland Yard, London, England from 18 December 1854 to 16 October 1872. The 1861 Census for Bow St. Mary, Middlesex states his occupation as "police constable".

Eliza left behind her bitter husband and sailed on the IDAHO with her children to America. They arrived on 29 Oct 1877 in New York Harbor.
