A Covenant With My Eyes

Fasten your seatbelts, this one may get rough.

Click here to jump past the Scriptures...but why would you want to?

Yob 31:1-12

1I forged a covenant for my eyes, and I would not gaze at a maiden. 2Why, then, is [this my] portion from God above and the legacy of the Almighty from on high? 3Behold, calamity is for a perverse person; disaster for those who commit iniquity. 4Does He not see my ways and count all my footsteps, 5whether I went with falsehood or if my feet hurried to deceit?, 6Let Him weigh me in the scales of righteousness; then God would know of my integrity.

7If my steps [ever] veered from the [proper] way or if my heart [ever] went after my eyes, or if anything [ever] clung to my hand, 8then may I sow and let another eat, and may my produce be uprooted! 9If my heart was [ever] seduced over a woman, or if I ever lay in wait at my neighbor's door, 10then may my wife grind for another man, and may strangers kneel over her!. 11For that is licentiousness; that is an iniquity for the judges [to punish]!. 12For it is a fire; it consumes unto doom, and it would uproot all my produce.

Vayikra 18:1-20
1HASHEM spoke to Moses, saying, 2Speak to the Children of Israel and say to them: I am HASHEM your God. 3Do not perform the practices of the land of Egypt in which you dwelled; and do not perform the practice of the land of Canaan to which I bring you and do not follow their traditions. 4Carry out My laws and safeguard My decrees to follow them; I am HASHEM your God. 5You shall observe my decrees and My laws, which man shall carry out and by which he shall live — I am HASHEM .

6Any man shall not approach is close relative to uncover nakedness. I am HASHEM .

7The nakedness of your father and the nakedness of you mother you shall not uncover; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness.

8The nakedness of your father's wife you shall not uncover; it is your father's shame.

9The nakedness of your sister — whether your father's daughter or your mother's daughter, whether born to one who may remain in the home or born to one who must remain outside of it — you shall not uncover their nakedness.

10The nakedness of your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter — you shall not uncover their nakedness; for they are you own shame.

11The nakedness of your father's wife's daughter who was born to your father — she is your sister; you shall not uncover her nakedness.

12The nakedness of your father's sister you shall not uncover; she is your father's flesh.

13The nakedness of you mother's sister you shall not uncover; for she is your mother's flesh.

14The nakedness of your father's brother you shall not uncover; do not approach his wife, she is your aunt.

15The nakedness of your daughter-in-law you shall not uncover; she is your son's wife, you shall not uncover her nakedness.

16The nakedness of your brother's wife you shall not uncover; it is your brother's shame.

17The nakedness of a woman and her daughter you shall not uncover; you shall not take her son's daughter or her daughter's daughter to uncover her nakedness — they are close relatives, it is a depraved plot. 18You shall not take a woman in addition to her sister, to make them rivals, to uncover the nakedness of on upon the other in her lifetime.

19You shall not approach a woman in her time of unclean separation, to uncover her nakedness. 20You shall not lie carnally with your neighbor's wife, to contaminate yourself with her.

Vayikra 18:21
21You shall not present any of your children to pass through for Molech, and do not profane the Name of God —I am HASHEM .

Vayikra 18:22-30
22You shall not lie with a man as one lies with a woman, it is an abomination. 23Do not lie with an animal to be contaminated with it; a woman shall not stand before and animal for mating, it is a perversion.

24Do not become contaminated through any of these; for through all of these nations that I expel before you became contaminated. 25The land became contaminated and I recalled it iniquity upon it; and the land disgorged its inhabitants. 26But you shall safeguard My decrees and My judgments, and not commit any of these abominations — the native or the proselyte who lives among you. 27For the inhabitants of the land who are before you committed all these abominations, and the land became contaminated. 28Let not the land disgorge you for having contaminated it, as it disgorged the nation that was before you. 29For if anyone commits any of these abominations, the people doing so will be cut off from among their people.

30You shall safeguard My charge not to do any of the abominable traditions that were done before you and not contaminate yourselves through them, I am HASHEM your God.’”

Sh’mot 20:13
13You shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness against your fellow.

Vayikra 20:1-14
1HASHEM spoke to Moses, saying, 2Say to the Children of Israel:Any man from the Children of Israel and from the proselyte who lives with Israel, who shall give his seed to Molech, shall be put to death; the people of the land shall pelt him with stones. 3I shall concentrate My attention upon that man, and I shall cut him off from among his people, for he had given from his offspring to Molech in order to defile My Sanctuary and to desecrate My holy Name. 4But if the people of the land avert their eyes from that man when he gives from his offspring to Molech, not to put him to death 5then I shall concentrate My attention upon that man and his family; I will cut off from among their people, him and all who stray after him to stray after the Molech. 6And the person who shall turn to the sorcery of the Ovot and the Yid'onim to stray after them — I shall concentrate My attention upon that person and cut him off from among his people.

7You shall sanctify yourselves and you will be holy, for I am HASHEM, your God.

8You shall observe My decrees and perform them — I am HASHEM, Who sanctifies you. 9For any man1 who will curse his father or mother shall be put to death; his father or his mother he has cursed, his blood is upon himself.

10A man who will commit adultery with a man's wife will have uncovered his father's shame; the two of them shall be put to death, their blood is upon themselves.

11A man who shall lie with his father's wife will have uncovered his father's shame; the two of them will be put to death, their blood is upon themselves.

12If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, the two of them shall be put to death; they have committed a perversion, their blood is upon themselves.

13A man who lies with a man as one lies with a woman, they have both done an abomination; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon themselves.

14A man who shall take a woman and her mother, it is a depraved plot; they shall burn him and them in fire, and there shall not be depravity among you.

15A man who shall lie with an animal shall be put to death; and you shall kill the animal. 16And a woman who approaches any animal for it to mate with her, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall be put to death, their blood is upon them.

17A man who will take his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother, and he shall see her nakedness and she shall see his nakedness, it is a disgrace2 and they shall be cut off in the sight of the members of their people; he will have uncovered the nakedness of his sister, he shall bear his iniquity.

18A man who shall lie with a woman in her affliction and has uncovered her nakedness, he will have bared her source and she has bared the source of her blood; the two of them will be cut off from the midst of their people.

19The nakedness of your mother's sister or your father's sister shall you not uncover, for that is baring one's own flesh.; they shall bear their iniquity. 20And a man who shall lie with his aunt will have uncovered the nakedness of the uncle; they shall bear their sin, they shall die childless. 21A man who shall take his brother's wife, it is loathsome; he will have uncovered his brother's shame, they shall be childless.

22You shall observe all My decrees and all My ordinances and perform them; then the Land to which I bring you to dwell will not disgorge you.

I don't think I have to really explain “You shall not commit adultery” to any believer. This means, “You shall not commit adultery”. What is adultery? The classic definition is "having relations with someone you're not married to." But the Messiah told us it goes a step forward:

Mattit'yahu 5:27-28
27You have heard that it was said to those of old, you shall not commit adultery; Sh’mot 20:13b   28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

What you think in your heart, it is the same as if you'd done it.

Yoma 39A The school of R. Ishmael taught: Sin dulls the heart of man, as it is said: Neither shall you make yourselves unclean with them, that you should be defiled thereby. Read not we-nitmethem [that you should be defiled], but u-netamothem [that you should become dull hearted]. Our Rabbis taught: `Neither shall you make yourselves unclean that you should be defiled thereby.' If a man defiles himself a little, he becomes much defiled: [if he defile himself] below, he becomes defiled from above; if he defile himself in this world, he becomes defiled in the world to come. Our Rabbis taught: Sanctify yourselves, therefore, and be you holy: If a man sanctify himself a little, he becomes much sanctified. [If he sanctify himself] below, he becomes sanctified from above; if he sanctify himself in this world, he becomes sanctified in the world to come.

and again,

Sukkah 52a The Evil Inclination has seven names. The Holy One, blessed be He, called it Evil, as it is said, For the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. Moshe called it the Uncircumcised, as it is said, Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart. David called it Unclean, as it is said, Create me a clean heart, O L-rd, which implies that there is an unclean one. Solomon called it the Enemy, as it is said, If your enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat and if he be thirsty give him water to drink. For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head, and HASHEM will reward thee; read not, `will reward thee' but `will cause it to be at peace with thee.' Yesha’yahu called it the Stumbling-Block, as it is said, Cast you up, Cast you up, clear the way, take up the stumbling-block out of the way of my people. Yechezk’el called it Stone, as it is said, And I will take away the heart of stone out of your flesh and I will give you a heart of flesh. Yo’el called it the Hidden One, as it is said, But I will remove far off from you the hidden one.

Sanhedrin 106b But it is because the Holy One, blessed be He, requires the heart, as it is written, But HASHEM looks on the heart.

The commandments say:

None of you shall approach to any who is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness; I am HASHEM .

Why? Simple. HASHEM requires your whole heart, as it is written:

You shall love HASHEM your God with your whole heart”.

For what you do in your heart, it is the same as if you'd done it in reality, as it is written:

You shall not hate your brother in your heart.

So, therefore, this translates "Our brother" as one of your own people.

And the man who commits adultery with another man's wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. And the man who lies with his father's wife has uncovered his father's nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

You shall not look upon the nakedness of another man's wife. Every woman is another man's daughter, or sister, or wife. If she is single, she may become someone's wife someday. You shall not look at pornography; it is sin. You commit adultery in your heart, thereby polluting your heart. The Holy Spirit will not dwell in the heart polluted, as it is written,

You shall love HASHEM your God with all your heart”, and “You shall have no gods before me”.

You have looked upon the nakedness of another man's wife, or daughter, or sister. Gazing at swimsuit magazines, or movies does the same sin. They are uncovered. Were is it written one must be completely nude to qualify as nakedness? A believer has no business owning a Swimsuit calendar, magazine, or screensaver. What is your justification? It does no harm? You cannot serve God and lust both. Do you say, "Well, I'm not related to her? She's not one of my kin?" Prove it. Any foray into Genealogy will amaze you as how complex and convoluted it can be! Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue? Stay away from it. Explicit TV? You don't need it. Pornography? It brings death. The Miss America swimsuit competition? The same thing.

I have made a covenant with my eyes not to gaze upon a maiden.

Be Content with the wife of your youth. You can only have one God. Your father in heaven gave these commandments to help you, not hurt you.

Hebrews 13:4
4Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

You shall not defile your marriage bed with thoughts of this kind. Be true to your wife. Treat your wife as the bride she still is, and she'll be that bride. Do you need someone to make you feel special? Stop being so selfish, and love your wife, as the Scriptures command you — She'll make you feel special again if you do. I dare you, try it.

Man shall not lie with man, nor woman with woman, nor man or animal with beast.

These are not my Laws, they belong to God, who is holy, blessed be He. Many justify this as being "The Law" and say that they are no longer under the law (you know our position on that theory), or claim that Moshe was speaking on his own, and added to God's law, or that Ezra added to the Torah. Note that the commandments read, “And HASHEM spoke to Moshe...”. And for the theory that this is not in the B'rit Chadashah, the word "Whoremonger" is actually "Pornos" in the Greek. The Harlot in Babylon is referred to as "Porne". Any questions? Good. These are the laws of God. Do them and you shall live in them.

1 Vayikra 20:9. The repetition of אִישׁ אִישׁ teaches that one is liable for cursing his parents even if he does so after their death (Rash).

2 Vayikra 20:17. The word חֶסֶד has two meanings: kindness and disgrace. The two are related, because the disgrace of immorality is the product  of overindulgence (Radak).
