Lashon Ha'rah

Why do we concern ourselves with a Hebrew phrase that means "The Evil Tongue?" Lashon Ha'rah is an entire concept all on its own. It could easily occupy an entire division on the commandments, and entire books could be written on it. Such as, here's all the commandments concerning Lashon Ha'rah.

As you can see, it talks about a lot more than just gossip. Gossip and outright mean talk is the most common form of Lashon Ha'rah. But there are other implications as well. For instance, Jewish law forbids calling anyone by an insulting nickname, even if they are accustomed to it. Speaking the truth about someone in front of their enemies is a form of Lashon Ha'rah. Praising someone in a circumstance that you know will provoke others to speak badly about someone is also a form of Lashon Ha'rah.

Inviting someone to dinner on a day you know they cannot accept (if done deliberately) is a form of Lashon Ha'rah. The tongue is a fire, a blaze. It can set nations on fire overnight. A carelessly whispered grievance can start wars (remember Mein Kampf?). Indeed, let me show you an area in which you probably yourself engage in Lashon Ha'rah.

Ever engage in "rabbi Bashing?" You do the "Pulpit swarm" after service, to tell the rabbi how wonderful he was...then as you drive away (On Shabbes?), you proceed to talk badly about him, or how much you disagreed with his sermon, or how silly the Cantor looked tonight...Oy! See commandments 529, 530, 533, 534, and 549. #538 shows why the Sages liken gossip to murder. From your mouth comes both blessings and curses...this not ought to be.

We are commanded to love our neighbor as ourselves. When we speak badly about people, we defame them. This is my weakest area. I have one of those tongues where I can flay the skin from your bones with one or two words; not to mention a glare that can probably melt brick. So, let us not gossip about people, nor insult them, nor make malicious comments, nor bear false witness ... LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR.
