Monday - April 14, 2003

Hunter took a trip to the Shrine Circus on Saturday. He even got to drive an elephant!

The circus adventure seemed to be very good for him. Hunter is still not talking much, but the professionals tell us this is to be expected, and understandable, for anyone that has gone through such a traumatic experience. He has no apparent anxiety about dogs or animals of any kind, he just seems to be absorbed in his own world. It will take time for Hunter to make sense of what happened to him.

Last week Hunter was examined by his plastic surgeon, Dr. Conrad, and there will be another evaluation in about 6 weeks. That should be long enough to see how well Hunter is healing, and then we will know more about options concerning future surgery.

It looks like Stephen will be leaving to join his Army unit at the end of April. We don't know exactly where Stephen will be stationed yet, but he will be going to Helena Montana to report for duty with his hospital unit. We are grateful that he was able to stay in Wichita with Hunter to help him get back on his feet. It would have been unthinkable for Hunter to wake from his month-long sleep, and have his dad not be there for him.

Stephen underwent a surgery of his own last week; he had his gall bladder removed! He was only down for a few days, and is back in full form now. It would be great if Stephen could stay with Hunter for a while longer, but the Army has a lot of work to do, and Stephen feels he needs to get back with his unit to help out.

Pray for our troops to all come home soon.

Thanks for dropping by to check on Hunter and family! We are getting ready for "Dog Bite Awareness Week" in May. We are making progress on the HelloHunter website remodel. Check back next week, we will have an update to the dog bite information at Never Again! coming soon.

Thank You Midian Shriners!

Hunter is playing quietly at home with his sisters.

He will need more time to get well, and they are helping Hunter to pass the time with games and movies.

Hunter met with his plasitic surgeon Friday, and he was pleased with the progress Hunter is making. His skin grafts are doing well. He will do another evaluation in about 2 weeks.

He also has appointments this week with his therapists to help with his speech and emotional recovery process. Hunter is still not talking as much as he was, (he was quite a chatterbox), but some of that may be due to some of the medication he is taking for pain and anxiety. No one would feel very chipper if they were in Hunter's shoes, so we understand why he may not be as active as he will be in the future.

Hunter is able to get around quite well, and is getting better at eating solid food. He still likes his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and they are easy for him to chew.

A lot of folks have asked about Stephen's status with his Army unit. As of right now, it looks like he will be able to stay with Hunter for at least another month. We don't know exactly when Stephen will be called to duty, but at least for now he can stay in Wichita.

We have made good progress with the work we are doing on reducing dog bites. Here is a link to some good information on dog behavior provided by The American Veterinary Medical Association. We are learning more all the time about what causes dogs to bite, both when the dog is a stranger, and when the dog is living with the family. As we find out more, we will update Never Again!

Check back next week. We'll have some more pictures of Hunter, and can give you an update on how he is doing then.

Pray for our troops.
