A Little About Henry
by Meowmie Lois

Henry came to live with me in December of 1988. We were immediate 'best friends'. We played together - we sat together on the patio enjoying the morning freshness - we simply 'hung out' together. We seemed to communicate without verbal language. Looking back, it appears so ordinary ... yet how precious this simple, uncomplicated happiness.

Freya joined us in 1997, but Henry and I always maintained our special relationship. I loved him with my whole heart and still do.

This precious boy aged with grace and dignity.
Henry's sweet face will always shine in my heart.

It is my pleasure to share a few of our times together.

Early Days Together

Henry was a little over a year old when I got him. He had wandered into the yard of a friend of mine. She had cats and Henry didn't get along with them as he wanted to be top cat. It was my lucky day when she asked me if I'd give him a home.

Henry was used to being an outdoor cat and I'd let him out briefly before and after work. One winter evening I left the door open a crack so Henry could come in. I heard a strange noise from outside and walked over to the door to investigate. And here comes Henry with a mouse (or what I thought was a mouse) wiggling and squeeking. Naturally - I screamed. Henry dropped the mouse and looked at me with astonishment.

There was a bookcase in the entryway and the mouse scurried behind it. The only way to get to the mouse was to move the bookcase out. So I started removing the books - making a 'wall of books' across the entry way so that the mouse would run OUTSIDE and NOT INSIDE.

As I continued removing the books, my neighbors came home and they also stared at me with astonishment. But they joined in and helped me move the books and bookshelf. She reached under it with a yard stick saying,

"I see it.
I'm getting him.
He's OUT !!!
Ohhhhh ....
It's a baby rabbit !!!!!"

Now we were concerned for the rabbit. He didn't appear to be hurt and her husband took him over to a green area where Henry probably got him. We all worried about the little critter and wished we could have kept him - but didn't know the agencies that might be able to help at that time.

My neighbors teased me for years about that experience.

More New Experiences for Henry's Meowmie

In the early days I'd have to go looking for Henry before I went to work. I lived in a building with 8 units - 4 downstairs and 4 upstairs. The man below me had cats also - with a cat door in back for them. Henry soon learned about that cat door - but didn't tell me (of course).

So I'd go out and walk around the building, looking for Henry, hoping I'd find him soon and not be late to work. Returning to my unit one morning, here I saw Henry - INSIDE the neighbor's condo - looking out the kitchen window at me.

So - here I am - dressed properly for work - on my hands and knees behind my neighbors unit - holding the cat door open and calling Henry. He was such a sweet boy and would always come.

My neighbors enjoyed the show and didn't seem to mind my kitty insanity.

Freya and Henry

Sometime after I got Freya, I purchased two tunnels for cats. They were round - each about 2 or 3 feet long - padded inside - AND they could be hooked together making a LONG tunnel for them.

Silly Freya LOVED to jump at Henry or jump over him (her favorite because it startled him so). Then she'd run, run, run through the tunnel, out the other end and into the bedroom. There she'd hide under the bed. Henry always pursued her - running through the tunnel and into the bedroom - but she was faster and he could never catch up with her.

UNTIL - inspiration struck one day. Instead of chasing her through the tunnel he ran around the tunnel and went in the other end. I heard a 'THUNK'. Henry backed out - and here came Freya out, very slowly, and shaking her head.

It was so fun - being there when these cute things happened.

From Karen, Boo & Valkyrie

Our deepest sympathy, prayers, thoughts and love to you. Henry was one of the first Internet Cats I ever met, and the love and friendship extended to Boo will always be treasured. Henry's name will go on forever in our hearts, and knowing him is an honored gift to us to keep in our souls. Thank you for sharing Henry with me, and please know that my life was touched by him in a very big way. Henry has now graduated from a back fence to ruling over the Gates of Heaven.

Henry Indoors

After I started keeping Henry in all the time, he especially loved being out on the back patio. I put in a kitty door so he could go out into a big cage and watch the birds and just enjoy being outdoors.

If I were on the patio also, I would let him out of the cage. I couldn't leave him alone back there as he'd jump off.

Can you imagine - some cat walking along down below - enjoying the day - and having a 16 pound tabby plunging down upon him from above?

Henry would usually end up snoozing on a chair, but Freya loved to peer down into the plants. Sometimes she'd scare out a moth - and did she ever have fun then - trying to catch it - always without success.

This went on - day after day - until one morning, Henry could not resist his curiousity. He went over to the plant and stuck his face down into the leaves - just as Freya always did. No moths were lurking there that day. So Henry got back up on his chair and finished his nap. I guess his thought was, "That silly Freya. Always doing some dumb thing."

When Henry slept, he looked like he had a little smile on his face. And I think he did, as he was a happy, amiable, delightful cat.

Henry and the Internet and the BFCC

Not only did Henry transform my life but he transformed my internet persona. He was my inspiration. When I first started the Back Fence Cat Club I knew nothing about making graphics. I had a camera, a hand held scanner and a simple graphics editing program. I made Henry's crown out of construction paper and colored the designs. I put a scarf around Henry's neck and held him with one arm under the scarf. I held the crown with my other hand from the back. A friend took the picture. I was able to crop it and put on his medal. I've never changed that picture - as I loved it and have loved all my days with Henry at the BFCC.

Remember "Wet N' Wild at the BFCC"
which Henry opened with these words?
Hello Everyone. Welcome to the
BFCC Wet and Wild Exposition
It's exciting ... {glub, glub} ...
and gratifying ...{swish, swish} ...
that so many kitties have responded - so bravely -
so courageously!! ...
... {glub, glub, snort, choke, gasp} ...
More later ... {cough}

We sure had fun together. Like when a bunch of gurls were going to have a 'Gurls' Chat' - real time - and invited Freya. Henry, of course, saw the invitation. The night of the chat, Freya entered and chatted a while - then she'd leave - and Henry would go in, introducing himself as Henrieta. Then he'd leave and Freya would go back. I kept this up - and no one caught on to who Henry was. So I made a graphic of 'Henrieta and her kittens', uploaded it and gave them the page address. Fortunately they loved the fun of it all - and that was the start of the legend of 'Henrieta'.

I could go on forever

about my sweet Henry

who now reigns at the bridge.
