WHEELCHAIR MODIFICATION: Arrow Invacare

2.) ARMREST MOUNTS

As can be seen on the sub-frame photo, both the armrest mounts and the leghanger mounts are integral to the tubular sub-frame weldment. It is really no loss because the leghanger mounts are very flimsy as well as being too wide and uncomfortable. Also the armrest mounts set the armrests too far outboard.

Using tubing cut out of the sub-frame and some 1” x 1” x 1/8” angle a bracket was made that will receive the unmodified armrest assembly. Vertical adjustment is still possible. The new armrest bracket bolts to existing holes using the existing bolts in the back of the seat.

The new armrest mount brings the armrest inboard by about 1-1/4” per side. Originally they stuck out further than the drive wheels, so the first thing contacting door frames, etc. was the armrests. In addition the armrest now sets further rearward which aids in dismounting (transferring) from the side. The joystick side armrest is angled inward slightly to bring the outside of the joystick about flush with the outside of the seat. This keeps knuckles safely off of door jams.

The swingaway joystick mount was reassembled using existing, unmodified parts so the joystick is slightly inboard of the armrest.
