WHEELCHAIR MODIFICATION: Arrow Invacare

1.) LOWER SEAT HEIGHT

The Arrow is built in layers, one stacked on top of the other. The net result is a very high sitting chair.

A tall chair where the user seats high, tends to wheelie easier. A chair where the user sits lower will handle both lateral and fore/aft accelerations more controllably.

To lower the seating height amounts to removing a couple layers. There are three layers in the mounting of the van style seat. The first layer removed is the tubular sub-frame. This sub-frame also mounts the armrests and leghangers, more about these later.

The second layer removed is the angled brackets used to set the seat dump. I did not photograph these brackets.

The third and final layer is the cast bracket that mounts to the top of the frame rail. Removing it would lower the seat about another inch, but it would require making a complete new seat mounting bracket. Since leaving this cast bracket would put the floor to top of seat cushion at approx. 18-1/2”, which is low enough to comfortably get my legs under tables, I only modified the bracket to allow bolting the van seat to it. Three slots and milling out bolt head clearance took about 30 minutes. Makes the installation look “factory”.
