WHEELCHAIR MODIFICATION: Quickie S-626

4.) RAISE ANTI-TIPPER CASTERS

This is the second easiest modification.

At first I thought about making the height adjustable but finally opted for a simple, better looking spacer to lift the wheels about an inch off the ground. So far I've never needed more and the spacers look "factory".

To install the spacers two 9/32" diameter holes must be drilled in each top link. Set a 2x4 under the wheel while installing the spacer and you are finished.

Oh, and don't worry about the "rocking horse" effect some mid-wheel drive chairs experience, the new seat position isn't that far back.

I see you smiling! Yes, the S-626 started out rear wheel drive but shifting the seat backward does turn it into about 75% mid-wheel drive. Wheelies are still easy to allow curb jumping yet the chair feels more stable without so much tittering.

As mentioned previously, you'll see some improved battery charge longevity with the anti-tippers off the floor. In addition the house carpets will last longer and you may never have to replace worn out anti-tipper tires.
