Like I stated earlier, I've been in the hobby for about nine years. I
originally started out as a Freshwater fish keeper. My first tank was a
ten gallon, I had bought from a friend, just to have a nice little something to
enhance my new apartment living room. I didn't know it was the beginning
of a huge, huge investment beyond my belief. If you had told me that I
would have accumulated more than $6000.00 in fish equipment, accessories, fish
and coral, I would have told you were crazy, but I have. I don't
keep an account on my expenditures, I don't want anything to reinforce the fact
that I have a problem.
I move from the ten gallon to a 55 gallon when my Oscar got too big. I
then bought several more fish and they grew so I moved up to a 75gallon. I
wanted larger, so then moved to a hundred gallon, and I have had it for 7 1/2
years. I traded all my freshwater fish in for salt and crush coral after
my favorite freshwater fish
(arowanna), jumped out of the tank and died. So, I then begin my
saltwater journey. I didn't kill many fish in the beginning because I
mainly brought aggressive fish, but I unfortunately fell victim to a couple of
stores who sold me corals knowing I didn't have the system to maintain
them. I learned fast to research, research, research before I go to the
shops, cause most will sale you anything if they could.
Now,
this summer was pretty good, I added several new fish along with a few new
corals. I also bought a new 1/3 hp chiller along with a U.V.
Sterilizer. Added a new ballast to my existing halide set-up and put
an close loop system on my tank. This summer was really productive and I
plan to buy an 215gal. by December. I'm in the process of designing
my stand and canopy. I've found that D.I.Y. projects are cheaper and
more rewarding. I built my Sump, which I broke this past summer so I had
to purchase an new sump one. I built my canopy, canopy top for refugium,
my reservoir, and did all the work on the Refugium. I think I've done a
pretty good job and have spent half the money. My tank is running at peak
performance right now. I switch from biweekly water changes to smaller
weekly water changes and I must say it looks good. I also just purchased
some 14k bulbs which looks beautiful.
