I am a San Diego native who was a pitcher at
Crawford High
School. In 1964, as an 18 year-old, I was drafted to be a catcher with the Milwaukee
Braves My grandpa played with the Braves in the
early 1900's so although other teams
offered me contracts, they were my chosen team.
Shortly thereafter, I
signed with the
Chicago
White Sox and remained with them until 1974 when
I was traded to play with the
New
York Yankees. I ended my career in 1978 after playing
with the Los Angeles Angels the
Houston
Astros and the
Montreal Expos.
My
highlight year was 1970 when I hit 19 home runs for the
White Sox for a .283 batting average and 52 RBI's.
I was also elected to play in the 1974 All-Star Game. While
playing with the Houston Astros in 1976, I caught a
no-hitter for
Larry Dierker
.
Since leaving the major leagues, I have worked in many
capacities in baseball including a baseball scout,
tutor, a coach, and a manager of youth teams ranging in
age from 13 thru college. Of these travel teams, I've
coached 4 national championships. Many of the players I
tutored or coached on my teams, have gone on to have
successful careers in Professional baseball or used
their talents to receive college scholarships.
Present Positions:
I am a year-round coach for
Del Mar Powerhouse.
During the summer months, I work with high school age
baseball players on travel teams. I also works many
baseball camps and tutor most levels for hitting and
catching.
Volunteer with
The Rock Academy
baseball team.
In addition to coaching, I am the
Director of West Coast Recruitment
at
Seminara Sports (www.seminarasports.com).
This position allows me to
recruit and develop a business relationship with the top
talent on the West Coast with Major League skills. The
Seminara approach is to build a relationship with the
athletes based on trust and honesty to provide the best
contract and representation.

FUN FACTS |
|
I had the fortune
of participating in 1 no-hitter in 1967 for Joel Horlen
and catching another in 1976 for Larry Dierker.
Read
about the Dierker no hitter.

My fans called me "SupHerrmann"
and my teammates called me "Hoggy"
and
"Fort Herrmann". |
|
"Hoggy"
is still my nickname today. |
|
In 1972, I was involved
in three double plays to set a record for most double plays
involving a catcher in a single game. The three include,in
the middle of a pitcher-catcher-first base, a strike em’
out, thrown em’ out stealing twin killing and a thrown out
at home, throw out at second one. The Sox turn five double
plays against Baltimore but lose 2-1. |

I had what I thought was a fulfilling life
but on December 23th, 1991 my life changed forever. That is
the day my father passed away.
For many years my mother and brother were
active Christians and my father and I weren't. I know now, we
both were the recipients of many prayers.
Although I thought there was a God, I never
knew how to reach him. I also thought I had everything I ever
needed....fame, baseball, money and many bad habits. The
fateful day in 1991...the day I felt so lonely and lost was
the first time I knelt down to pray to Jesus to ask for help
and invite him into my life. Since that day, I know I am a
sinner but I am forgiven
and I will have eternal life. Now, I know I have everything
I ever needed and each day continues to bring new blessings.
