Roy Pinn and HOT ICE
Deep within the blazing ground heat of Arizona's desert, one might ?not expect ice to be a commodity easily found. But it's there. In fact it's a very hot commodity. Granted, the combination of extreme heat and ice may appear to be a strange notion, but nonetheless, Arizona blues music lovers have been experiencing HOT ICE for more than a decade.
Lead vocalist and harmonica player Roy Pinn hails from East Boston where he honed his musical skills. Pinn has racked up years on the road performing his intense blazing harmonica and emotional vocal style. Gigs included opening spots for Jonny Copeland, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and with television personality Woody Harrelson. As a founding member, Roy started HOT ICE in 1985 as a showcase for his concept of a "no holds barred" type of rhythm & blues. Not one to be confined to the parameters of traditional blues, Roy tells his band mates... "look, the rules are... THERE ARE NO RULES! Don't talk about any music theory Bull S#%@ or how a song must be played a certain way. Just play from your heart and soul & don't ever hold back!"Roy Pinn & HOT ICE can be experienced live or on their King Pinn C D release which includes group original, "KNOCK-KNOCK. Other live performance favorites highlighted are BORN IN CHICAGO, LAST NIGHT, and CONGO SQUARE. C D's are available at all band performances.

Phoenix Bluesman, Roy Pinn Speaks
About His Life... Music... & Turning 50
by Derret Ross
It's another warm Wednesday evening in July and the parking lot pavement at The BLUE NOTE, Scottsdale's premier blues night spot, shows damp evidence that a monsoon must of passed through while I was inside catching an energetic set by Roy Pinn & HOT ICE. While leaning up against his white mini truck which sports a huge dent behind the passenger side rear wheel well, I proceed to conduct an impromptu interview with Roy Pinn, the man who's been at the helm of Phoenix mainstay blues band HOT ICE for over fifteen years.
Derret Ross: So... Roy... I've just learned that on August 11 you'll be turning fifty years old. How ya been feeling?
Roy Pinn: Actually, I feel pretty good. I've just been kick'n back.
DR: Where were you born?
RP: Tewksbury, Massachusetts.
DR: Is that were you spent your childhood?
RP: Well... my mom was kind of troubled so I was in and out of foster homes and...uhhh... this and that when I was young so... really... the only kind of family I remember were the King family. I was with them for three or four years. Then I went back to my mother for awhile. Then I was put in some kind of... like a home in Swansea, Massachusetts. I really liked it there when I was a little kid. That's where I also attended jr. high school.
DR: When did you first become interested in music?
RP: My first instrument oddly enough was the accordion. I was nine or ten years old when I started. I stuck with it for a long time.
DR: When did you take up the harmonica?
RP: I was about seventeen or eighteen. I just kind of picked it up and... just kind of took to it and... I really liked it and I started listening to all the cats like Sonny Terry & Little Walter. I really liked the electrified harmonica. Ya know... the sound... ya know, like Magic Dick with the J. Giles Band and Rice Miller, who's also known as Sonny Boy Williamson.
DR: Was there a definitive person that inspired you to start playing the Harmonica?
RP: Actually, there were two cats. The first time I ever heard Paul Butterfield I said wow man, damn, this guy is real good! And he's a white dude! I also really liked Little Walter. He was bad! (translated: GREAT!).
DR: Do you remember your very first paying gig?
RP: Yes I do. I was about 20 years old living in Decatur, Illinois. I was playing in a six piece band called "Joe Five". We got paid a thousand dollars to play three and a half hours at an outdoor festival. We were kind of a one gig wonder though. After that gig the band broke up.
DR: What would you say was your best gig?
RP: The first thing that comes to mind that brought the most joy to my heart happened right here in Tempe, Arizona. It was a New Years Eve gig at Hayden Square with my band, HOT ICE. Thousands of people were all over the place. We arrived in a limousine and took the stage with all of us dressed in Tuxedos. During our show I was handing out single roses to beautiful ladies in the audience. The band sounded incredible. It was a great show. Then to top it off, we were featured on a local television evening news.
DR: For those who aren't familiar with your band, how would you describe your music?
RP: Well... since you just saw our first set, how would YOU describe it?
DR: I would call it blues... with a kind of rock edge...
that's sort of Jazzy.RP: That's good enough for me!
What's billed as "Roy's Birthday Bash" in celebration of his 50th birthday, Roy Pinn & HOT ICE will be performing Friday night, August 11 at The BLUE NOTE in Scottsdale (
8040 E. McDowell - 480-946-6227). If you've never seen HOT ICE perform live (they seem to be Phoenix's best kept secret), I'd recommend them highly to anyone who appreciates them low-down blues... with a kind of rock edge... that's sort of Jazzy... DR
