Ideas for a Christian dance class

START AND END WITH PRAYER

"Where two or more of you are gathered in my name, there I am in your midst." So start by inviting Jesus to come, watch, enjoy, and help. Then continue the attitide of prayer and worship as the class continues.

CLASSICAL BALLET

If you are planning a ballet class, think about giving a worship dance class. Not one where you learn steps to a song-- I mean, like a ballet class, only it's a worship service too. Plie, tendu, degage, ronde de jambe, a standard ballet class... all to worship music. Turn each barre exercise into a worship offering to the Lord. Each port de bras becomes an offering; each step becomes a surrender and a rejoicing.

If you are working with experienced dancers (or adventurous ones) try having your center work half choreographed and half letting the students improvise. Make the end of the class less about learning steps than about inventing them and offering them to the Lord.

MODERN DANCE

If you are planning a modern class, then be careful to warm your students up, physically and mentally too-- give them time to get over any shyness they have, and get their minds focused.

Once the students are warmed up and moving with some freedom, try some improvisation. You might be surprised how creative people are when they get going. Have the students develop their own dances. Form a circle and have everybody face outward so that they can't see each other, and then choose a song that they know, and have them interpret the lyrics line by line, without watching each other. See what they come up with. Maybe you'll take elements from each student's dance and blend them into a "final result", and the class will have choreographed their own version of a particular song. Or, let them each take home their own dance, untouched.
