Chronological event's of Walter Pool & some of his
descendants
-
1820 Walter Pool, son of William "The Joiner"
Poole of Virginia, is enumerated in Walton County, Georgia. He has 1 male
aged 16-18 and one male 16-26. A male between 16-18 is repeated in the 16-26
column; so this means he only had one male, aged 16-18, in the household. Robert
T. Pool, age 20-30, is enumerated in the 1830 census 7 households from
Walter Pool. His age range in 1830 coincides with the 16-18 male
enumerated with Walter.
- 1825 The March 1, 1825 issue of The Georgia Journal reported that
50 acres of land, the south part of lot number 337, in the 9th District
(originally Henry County now Newton County, Georgia), levied on as the property
of Joseph Dorsey, to satisfy fifa in favor of Walter Pool.
-
1827 Walter Pool, Revolutionary Soldier, drew Lot number 115,
District 20, Section 1 (Lee Co., GA.) in the 1827 Land Lottery.
-
1830 Walter Pool enumerated in Newton County, Georgia 7
households from Robert T. Pool.
-
1830 Robert T. Pool married Jemima McGraw on 27-Apr-1830
in Newton County, Georgia.
-
1830 Robert T. Pool, aged 20-30 and one female (Jemima),
aged 15-20, are enumerated in Newton County, Georgia. They are 7 households
away from Walter Pool
-
1831 William Ryley Pool was born 25-Mar-1831 in Newton County,
Georgia.
- 1832 Hardy K. Poole drew lot number 1079, district 21,
section 2 in the 1832 gold lottery. This lot is located in present day Cherokee
or Cass County.
- 1833 The Southern Recorder, Wednesday, February 27, 1833 reported
that Hardy K. Poole applied for letters of administration on the estate
of Walter Poole, late of said county, deceased (signed) J. L.
Hopkins C.C.O.
- 1833 On May 6, 1833 Hardy Keele Poole was appointed
administrator of Walter Poole's estate. A bond of $800.00 was posted by
Hardy K. Poole, Richard Quinn, and Ferdinand Beam.
- 1835 Land Sale: Newton Co., GA Ordinary Court Book 6, p 457,
recorded June 1835. Robert T. Pool purchased Lot Number 115, 20th
District, Stewart Co., GA from Hardy K. Pool (Administrator of Walter
Pool estate.) This is the same lot that Walter Pool drew in the 1827
land lottery.
- 1836 Land Sale: Newton Co., Ga. Deed Bk E, p401. Green B.
Turner of Newton Co., GA. to Hardy K. Pool of Marion Co., GA., for
$100.00, LL 337 in 9th Dt. of formerly Henry now Newton Co., 150ac /m/o/l, that

LL 337 in 9th Dt. of formerly Henry now Newton Co., N & E part containing
150ac /m/o/l. Wit: Lawrence Baker, Jos. T. Anderson, J.I.C.
Recorded March 26, 1836.
-
1838 Robert T. Pool is not in the 1838 Tax Digest of Macon
County, Georgia so he is probably still in Newton County, Georgia.
-
1840 Robert T. Pool, aged 30-40 is enumerated in Macon County,
Georgia with one female (Jemima), aged 20-30; one male, aged 0-5; one
female, aged 0-5 and two males, aged 5-10.
-
NOTE: Possible identification of Robert T. and Jemima's
children: The 0-5 year old male might be Hardy K. Pool, who is in the
1847 poor school funding list of Newton Co. and who is, aged 10, in the 1850
census of Newton Co. and living with Isaac Frasier. The 0-5 year old
female could be Lauretta Pool who is in the 1848 poor school listing
and is aged 15 in the 1850 census living with Priscilla Pool, aged 40 (Walter
Pool's daughter?) One of the 5-10 year old males is possibly Peter Pool,
aged 15, enumerated in Early Co. living with Martin McCann or William
T. Pool who is listed in the poor school funding for Newton Co. The other
male could be William Ryley Pool. William Ryley was not in the
poor school funding list for Newton Co. Since he enlisted in the Mexican War
in Jul 1847 and married in Marion County, Georgia in 1849, he may have gone to
live with his Uncle, Hardy K. Pool who was in Marion County, Georgia. in
1840. Is there a relationship between Robert T. Pool and Josiah
Pool? Josiah appears in Macon County, Georgia in the 1850 census
living close to where Robert T. Pool is located in the 1840 census. He
appears in Marion County, Georgia in the 1860 census (did he replace William
Ryley who was in Marion in 1850?) I have found no record of land transfers
by Robert T. Pool in Macon Co.
-
1842/7 Suspect Robert T. Pool either died or left home about
this time. Jemima is shown as a widow in the 1850 census and it appears
that two, possibly three, of her children (Hardy K., William T., and
Lauretta) have moved back to Newton County, Georgia.
-
1847 William Ryley Pool enlisted as a Private with Company C "Captain
Kendall's Company", Calhoun's Mounted Battalion on July 18, 1847 at
Columbus, Georgia to serve in the Mexican War. He was mustered in September 4,
1847.
- NOTE: Did William Ryley Pool join because his father, Robert
T. Pool, had died or did Robert T. Pool also enlist for the Mexican
War? Unable to find record of Robert T.'s death. He is not listed in
the Macon County, Cemetery Survey published by The Central Georgia Genealogical
Society .
-
1848 William Ryley Pool, aged 19, born Newton County, Georgia
mustered out of Mexican War service in Mobile, Alabama on July 9, 1848. William
lied about his age as he had just turned 18 when he was discharged.
-
1849 William Ryley Pool married Catherine McCloud on
4-Oct-1849 in Marion County, Georgia. He may have returned to Marion to stay
with his Uncle, Hardy Keele Pool who was enumerated in Marion County,
Georgia in 1840.
-
1850 William Ryley Pool, aged 19, and one female (Catherine),
aged 18, are enumerated in Marion County, Georgia. 1852 William Ryley Pool
moved to Baker Co., GA (William Ryley stated in his Mexican War pension
application that he lived in Marion County, Georgia for 4 years and then moved
to Baker County, Georgia
-
1850 Jemima Pool, a widow, aged 45, is living alone in a
boarding house in Randolph County, Georgia.
-
1850 Robert T. Pool is not listed in the 1850 Mortality Index so
he probably died prior to Jun 1849. Have not located when/where Robert T.
died or where he is buried.
-
1857 William Ryley Pool moved to Miller Co., GA. (William
Ryley stated in his Mexican War pension application that he lived in Baker
County, Georgia for 5 years and then moved to Miller County, Georgia.
- 1860 Jemima Pool, age 52, still alone and head of
household, occupation farming, is enumerated in Randolph County, Georgia. She
has real estate valued at $1500 and personal property valued at $5550. (Where
and how did she acquire the property?)
- NOTE: Jemima has a neighbor, Thomas Mitchell and
his wife who have William Pool, b. SC, and his family living with them.
The census does not list a value for real estate. They are possibly
associated with Jemima Pool.
- 1860 William Ryley Pool enumerated in Miller County,
Georgia with wife, Catherine, aged 29; a male R. C., aged 6; a
female, Mary L., aged 2; a male, W. L. aged 2 and a female, Susan
V., aged 2/12.
-
1862 Private William Ryley Pool enlisted for service with the
Confederate States Army on March 4, 1862 in Miller Co., GA. He served with
Company D "Captain Francis M. D. Hopkin's Company", 51
Regiment Georgia Infantry. He was appointed to Lieutenant on October 18, 1862.
-
1863 3rd. Lieutenant William Ryley Pool appears on the
January/February 1863 Company Muster Roll of Company D, 51 Regiment.
-
1864 Lieutenant William Ryley Pool was hospitalized in C. S. A.
General Hospital, Danville, VA. on June 4, 1864 and was furloughed on June 7,
1864. 1864 Lieutenant William Ryley Pool was hospitalized with diarrhea
in Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia on August 7, 1864. He was released for
duty on August 24, 1864. 1864 2nd. Lieutenant William Ryley Pool
appears on the November/December 1864 Company Muster Roll of Company D, 51
Regiment.
-
1865 2nd. Lieutenant William Ryley Pool was captured at
Petersburg, Virginia on April 5, 1865. 1865 2nd. Lieutenant William Ryley
Pool appears on a register of prisoners of war at Old Capital Prison,
Washington D. C. on April 9, 1865. 1865 2nd. Lieutenant William Ryley Pool
appears on a roll of prisoners of war at Depot Prisoners of War, near Sandusky,
Ohio. He was released from Johnson's Island, Ohio on June 19, 1865 upon taking
the oath of allegiance. He listed his place of residence as Damascus, Early
County, Georgia.
-
1870 William Ryley Poole is enumerated in Miller County, Georgia
with his wife, Catherine, aged 39; a male, Robert. C., aged 16;
a female, Mary L., aged 14; a male, William L. aged 12; a
female, Susannah, aged 10; a female, Kate aged 9; a female Frances
aged 2; and a female, Jemima Boothe, aged 57, house keeper, born
Georgia.
- NOTE: Suspect that Jemima Boothe is William Ryley's
mother, Jemima McGraw Poole, who has remarried. The ages track from
Jemima McGraw who married at approximately age 17 in 1830 to Jemima
Boothe, age 57 in 1870. One problem with this hypothesis is: Jemima
McGraw was born South Carolina and Jemima Boothe is listed as born
Georgia (Error on the part of the census taker?) Second problem, have been
unable to find a marriage of Jemima Any-Surname to a Boothe and
have been unable to find a Boothe with a given name of Jemima
(Another census taker error, Poole vs. Boothe?)
