Globecom 1997 minutes of meeting

Meeting at GLOBECOM'97, Phoenix
5 November 1997

The meeting began at 17:05 and 9 members were present.

1. Introductions

2. The minutes at ICC'97 were approved.

3. TPR reports

A. GLOBECOM'97: Jaafar Elmirghani reported 4 sessions organised, 4 sessions chaired, 9 sessions cosponsored.

B. ISPACS'97: Naohisa Ohta reported about 120 papers received, 8 sessions sponsored. The event has been affected by a local conf. Naohisa called for future participation.

C. IWANNT'97: Trevor Clarkson reported that he has taken chairman action in deciding SPCE sponsorship of this event. SPCE is one of two committees, conf. was June 9-11, 50 participants, 30 papers.

D. ICC'98: Nirwan Ansari reported that 553 papers were received, aiming to accept 350 papers (50 sessions, 7 papers each). SPCE handled 37 papers and sponsored one tutorial. Signal processing in wireless.

E. GLOBECOM'98: Jaafar Elmirghani reported that Feb. 13 98 is the new deadline, 1-3-98 papers to committees, reviews back by 11-5-98. No bidding process (local committee will assign papers). SPCE will make two tutorial proposals.

F. ISPACS'98: Naohisa Ohta reported that it is the week before GLOBECOM'98, in Australia, 6 June 98 deadline, members encouraged to submit.

G. ISCSDSP'98: New SPCE sponsored conf., Sheffield, UK, 6-8 April 98. Trevor read call for papers and reported 160 papers submitted from 30 countries, about 100 participants expected.

H. MELECON'98: New SPCE sponsored event, 18-20 May 98. SPCE to sponsor a session Trevor reported.

I. ICIN'98: SPCE to sponsor, but will not take part in review process, 13-15 May 1998.

J. ICDSPA: Initiative by Comsoc in Russia, members invited to go, June 30 to July 3, 1998

K. ATM'98: Chairs action, SPCE to sponsor, May 26-29, 1998.

L. ICT'97: Melbourne, Australia, 300 participants, 160 papers presented.

M. ICT'98: Athens, 22-24 June 98, deadline 15 Nov. 97. Chairs action, SPCE to sponsor.

N. MILCOM'97: Stuart Farquhar representing SPCE was at  MILCOM'97, future report expected

O. MILCOM'98: Stuart Farquhar and Ron Smith selected to represent SPCE.

P. ICC'99: Trevor Clarkson to represent SPCE.

Q. GLOBECOM'99: Ron Smith to represent SPCE.

Error concealment for ATM, speech and video (Farokh Marvasti), High security communication, Smart antennas for wireless (Nirwan Ansari), Intelligent control of ATM (Stamatios Kartalopoulos and Trevor
Clarkson), VLSI in communication (Vijay Kumar), Wavelets in Communication (Farokh Marvasti), voice for ATM (Nirwan Ansari), Blind equalisation, synchronisation, OFDM (everyone).

SPCE has sponsored two feature topics on VLSI to appear Dec. 97 and Mid 98.
Feature topic on optical wireless proposed by J. Elmirghani.

8. Distinguished lecturers: SPCE put forward three proposals (Stamatios
Kartalopoulos, Farokh Marvasti and Paul Mermelstein) waiting for COMSOC
response, Trevor Clarkson to find out more.
