ICC 1996 minutes of meeting

Signal Processing and Communication Electronics Technical Committee (SPCE)

Meeting at ICC'96, Dallas
24 June 1996

The meeting began at 5.00pm and 11 members were present.

1. The minutes of the meeting at GLOBECOM'95 were approved.

2. TPR Reports:

A. ICC'96.
There was no report.

B. GLOBECOM'96. Nov 18-22, 1996.  
120 papers had been received by the SPCE TP representative.
We have 2 Hot Topic sessions and are sponsoring up to 7 more.

C. ICC'97. June 8-12, 1997 in Montreal.
The TPC met on the following day.  The attachment to the minutes shows the sessions proposed.

D. GLOBECOM'97.
The TPC met on the following day.
New technical subject areas are to be sent to Jaafar Elmirghani by 26/6/96.
Interest in tutorials will be sought by a fill-in form with registration.
There will be 60 sessions, with 5 or 6 papers per session.  Some long papers are proposed.

E. ICC'98
TPC representative position is vacant

F. GLOBECOM'98
TPC representative is Jaafar Elmirghani

G. ISPACS'96.  Nov 25-29, 1996.
This will be with ICCS'96.   There are 114 papers.

  • ISPACS'97 will be in Malaysia, from 13-15 November 1997, Sarawak.
  • SPACS'98 will be in W. Australia.
  • ISPACS'99 or '00 will be held in Thailand.

H. NeuroFuzzy'96, 16-18 April 1996
This workshop was a success, where just over 100 persons attended and 50 papers were presented. Future events of this kind are likely to be held as part of IEEE Region 8's regional activities.

I. MILCOM'96.          
No information.

J. ICT'96, Istanbul
Dr Marvasti presented a report on ICT'96. 350 persons attended. ICT'97 will be held in Melbourne.

3. Workshop reports.

  • VLSI in Communications - a report was tabled by Vjay Kumar.
  • Speech Coding in Wireless - a workshop is planned in 1997.

 

4. Distinguished Speaker Program.
Stamatios Kartalopoulos was actioned to investigate the list of speakers.

5. Communications Magazine Liason.
The 1996 operating plan was tabled by Jaafar Elmirghani.  Special Issue topics are solicited.

6. New business
None

7. Nominations for Committee Officers, 1997 - 1998.
A sub-committee was set up, chaired by Paul Mermelstein. A notice will be sent out, nominations received and voting will take place at GLOBECOM'96.

8. Recertification of SPCE

  • Details of all activities over the past 3 years are to be sent to Stamatios Kartalopoulos by 15 September 1996.
  • We must provide: sessions sponsored or co-sponsored, tutorials, workshops
  • (where/when/no. of attendees), our interaction with other committees.
  • Our charter is to be reviewed (see WWW).

 

9. AoB
WWW links to ComSoc are to be added (this had been requested on a number of occasions).
The need for sub-committees within SPCE should be identified.

The meeting adjourned at 7.04pm.


Attachment to the minutes:
Stamatios Kartalopoulos attended the ICC'97 technical meeting that took place the day after our meeting. He reports that the ICC'97 Technical Committee will be accepting proposals for sessions, workshops and tutorials by the 15th of January 1996.  When the proposals are made, it is important to have names of organizers/chairs for each session proposed.
The following is a tentative list of sessions. We are looking for more proposals and also for organizers. Anyone interested to propose and organize a session please respond asap to Stamatios (svk@hotld.att.com, fax: 908-735-2830 or 908-949-6036); include name, address, phone no, fax no, and e-mail.  Proposals will be made based on interest and response.

  • Signal processing in Wireless Communications (Vijay Jain)
  • Video coding for Real-Time Multimedia Networks (Dr Fujii) - HOT TOPIC
  • Modulation and Coding for Satellite communications (organizer: ??)
  • Advanced topics in Signal processing in Telecommunications (Dr Elmirghani)
  • Intelligent Signal processing in communications. (Kartalopoulos & Clarkson)
  • VLSI for high speed comminications (Babak Daneshrad/Vijay Kumar)
  • Signal Processing for multimedia wireless access (Paul Mermelstein)
  • Digital signal processors in communications (Bahram Honary)

Tutorials:

  • Applications of Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic in communications systems (Stamatios Kartalopoulos)
  • Multimedia: Speech and Video Compression (Dr Marvasti)

Workshops:

  • Modulation and Coding in communications systems (Organizers ??)
  • VLSI for advanced signal processing and communications (Vijay Kumar)
  • Signal processing in SONET and ATM communications systems (Dr Kartalopoulos)
